Description ~ QIRIQUI ~

Wise little creatures with a sharp hearing ability & tolerance towards both extremely high & extremely low temperatures – heat of the day & freeze of the night. One can find them from several kinds of dry & hot areas. Usually they inhabit in deserts under the sand but I have seen some living in caves that were warmed up by a volcanic action taking place deep under the surface of the ground. It is actually a bit ironical that they prefer such areas as their ancestors lived in oceans as fishes by their form. Yes, I know. They now form part of this varying team of terrestrial life & don’t go even close to moving waters. No one knows why, but apparently one day one, two, maybe a whole dozen of their ancestors, decided to move their fin & climb on beach. They did not go back to the water but stayed & little by little moved every time farer & farer from their original element. The heirs of these fishes now fear water & have lost both their ability & will, to swim. Qiriquis do not even drink water as it is. Instead, time has granted them with two pairs of legs, sharp claws & good colour vision so that they can easily collect huge amounts of berries, fruits & nuts to satisfy both their hunger & thirst. Long nose is useful when eating the highly water containing pulp straight from the inside of the peel. This is also why qiriquis usually choose their homes so that they can easily find their way to some oasis or near forest to enrich their food storages. They also eat seeds, grains & small insects whenever they catch one.

How they protect themselves? Against cold of the night they have warm fur & against the hotness of the day large ears for the warmth of the body to escape. Against predators... as one can see, they are still sharing one thing in common with their ancestors - scales. No, it is not only as boring as a hard armour but when threatened they lift their scales slightly upwards so that they appear to be alike to sharp spikes protecting their eyes & covering the powerful tail. In addition, claws & spikes in the end of the fin-like structures of hands & tail, for example, make them harder to be beaten & eaten. In most of their natural habiting areas they are having so few natural predators, though, that mostly the fins & scales are one form of flaunting – even so far that the colours have gained more depth as the formerly sharp spikes had become more & more smooth. Every individual has their own natural differences shown especially in the colouring & the shining ability of the scales but – as the most important aspect – in the way the facial scales are arranged, coloured & shaped. Usually these colours vary from various hues of blue to green - even silver & violet. The fur is usually brownish with black chest & lighter coloured lower back.

One could easily state that Qiriquis truly are a bit vainglorious by their mannerism. Not only the appearance but also the decoration of one’s homeburrow & assortment, cleanness & size of the food storage tells about the owner. Qiriquis love shiny. Qiriquis love colourful. Qiriquis love to storage.

Furthermore, this shows.

Not only they fill their burrows with attentively chosen decorations but also they like to carry jewels among them whenever they find a fitting one. They have gone even so far that some Qiriquis do them by themselves: earrings from clip of wire & necklaces from old bracelets & silken ribbons. By their nature they are generally shy & cautious, extremely silent creatures but their obsession to the hetics cause them to visit towns & cities at times. Coins with a hole in the middle & coloured, transparent stones they are especially fond of. Some antique dealers are known to let a Qiriqui to keep the shop as their homeburrow & – for the sake of reciprocal service (nowadays nothing is gained free) - take care of the differentiating between objects with high value & bauble. [*1]

Most of the cases Qiriquis nevertheless desire to life at hot, sandy deserts more likely than close to other species. Qiriquis inhabit large areas, enjoy having neighbours & are surprisingly social by their behaviour towards their kind. Mainly they can be divided into two main groups: those who life in trees & those who do not. Some of the qiriquis do not even touch the ground once in their lifetime. These individuals, living at oasis, are skilled in climbing, & gliding with a help from their ears, tail & wing-like structures (former fins) attached to their arms. Unlike their cousins inhabiting the caves & sand, these qiriquis usually craft their jewellery by themselves from wood, leaves & other natural materials.

Qiriquis living on bare sand usually select very fine-grained sand to dig their homes under. They build up their home deep under the surface from pieces of wood & stones or in natural caves. These burrows do not have visible entrance on the surface. Instead, they can swim under the sand & mark their homes on the surface by using some other way and that how make it difficult for the possible predators to find the tunnels. Usually the burrows form large networks under the desert consisting of personal nests but also personal & shared food storages & meeting cavities. Still, nevertheless seemingly varying living conditions, qiriquis do not survive in cold areas. They can cope with the low temperatures taking place during night time but coldness throughout the day would cause them to fall in hibernation or cause them to die.

As an extra information, in some cultures qiriquis are thought to resemble wealth and seeing one promising awaiting richnesses. On the other hand many people argue that more suitable symbolism would more likely include cowardice and arrogance.

EDIT:
Tags added - should I remove them... (?)

This is my entry to a creature designing contest held by . You can see the requirements given for every creature from here [link] . : D The "extract" is pretty long and I won't give guarantee for grammar correctness what comes to it... I just yesterday evening realized that if I want to join, today is the last day to do so. ": D In the other words I faced some hurry here and I had to take the original version of the comments in all its length and glory. The background of the picture is slightly edited because the original work is made on cardboard and apparently "my scanner+cardboard = headache to me".

I think every aspect needed, is mentioned in the Extract but I feel like a need to list down the most important ones too, just for sure:

Phobia:
- hydrophobic, fear of water in its "pure" form

Unique Ability:
- floating by using their ears as help(?)
- swimming in sand
- differentiating between valuable and bauble

Color Theme:
- green (with brown and black, other colours vary depending on individual)

Unique Natural Feature:
- scales around the eyes: colour, shape and size

Thank you! I hope you enjoyed this even though its mile length...

Qiriquis, text and picture "belong" to me. (I still feel strange using that "belong".) Copying, reproducing etc. is not allowed without my written permission.

So cute! It's like a cross between an anteater and a fish... and the "gathering instinct" somehow reminds me of squirrels. :3 I liked your long and intriguing abstract very much as well and the name really suits the creature.

(I feel so annoyed by the spelling mistakes in the tags and that I hadn't time to correct them... yet.
xD And I don't even know whether I should keep them or not in the first place. Opinion? I can say that without the tags it looked emptier, though.)

Tags? Do you mean the footnotes? I think they fit as it really looks like an illustration from a book, in a good way. (:

Yes. xD What ever they're called. I usually use them only in sketch versions at times. Marking down the possible colours and textures etc.

Colours are still a bit off from the ones I had in my mind. Well, have to take a fresh look to them some day and see if I can reach any closer to that I at least had painted in my mind. Don't know. <____<"

Thank you for your opinion. n____n

Mhm. They like ants. : )

Long abstract it truly is. I had to take part family life and also do some school things yesterday so I just rushed the picture and did not have time to go through the text properly. =____=" But it's better with the text or no text at all. (And more reading is to come sometime soon because I also joined one another creature-designing -thing. I really like these.)

They would gather your cockroaches, keys and some nice, soft sheets of books, too, if that only would be possible. o.o" (I've found the reason why my things are always lost!)

They needed some quick and lively name and after playing with some sharp q-letter I ended up with "qiriqui". Kirikiri. xD And I wanted it to differ from the names of my other creatures.

They would take sheets from books? D: *quickly tries to hide some of the books lying everywhere and fails*. I could help you spotting the spelling mistakes (as it's easier to spot them from somebody else's text that from one's own) if you'd like? I read it while I was extremely tired so I don't even remember really spotting (m)any mistakes. ^^

I afraid so. Ophiopogon at least wouldn't be delighted to meet one in "his" Library. They like warn and especially nice, soft paper sheets would be likely to work as a good insulation...

...should I hide my books too?! *looks around and concludes that it's somewhat impossible with my limited might*

I hate spelling mistakes. I already spotted some most obvious ones, of course, but some mistakes can take a forever to be noticed. I hear the text inside my head while writing (as if one kind of a "narrator" voice), so I often times somwhat adjust my written language to it. Working against it does no good - that I've already concluded. xD My bad is the tendency to write too long and complicated sentenced. (Though I at least realize this bad. : ) Nontheless, you're very much free to list the ones you find/ have already found. n___n

Mysterious ";" makes me still to ponder. Personally I don't use it but I've followed the range of places I've met it, though. o__o"

What I've observed is that the "mysterious ;" is much too often found in places it should never be in the first place. It's really not that compicated to use: it belongs to a place where a "." would be too much but any lesser mark not enough to achieve the desired effect. As a basic rule you can't use the "mystery mark" if replacing it with a "." would make the two halves separated by the mark grammatically not sentences. I hope this was somehow understandable... ^^'

I don't think your sentences are too long, no way! (I however, as a lover of long and complicated text structures, might be just a bit biased...)

Well, anyway, keep your "quiriquiries" (awws) away from books whenever possible.

That one I can agree. In theory I know where and how to use it, but after seeing it so many strange places I don't feel comfortable doing so. Instead I create my sentences some other way. <___<"

I like long and complicated too. ^___^ But there are peoplle who don't enjoy them (<- the same person who wouldn't like the amount of my "()"s. ": P ) I just don't understand how short should the sentences be then...

n____n Have to be careful not to bring them into the "real" library with me, then. Imangination creatures are so much fun. : D

I don't use it when writing in English as I'm not sure if they use it some other way.

At least you won't ever hear me complaining about the use of brackets as I absolutely love them! One of the best elements you can add to your text and simply by just adding some punctuation marks. (:

I don't either. In neither languages because I've seen so many times people doing it wrong. u____u

I love brackets too. I have to agree with everything you siad about them there. : D (They really are that nice. : )

Oh. You meant a real specie. From a first reading the name just sounded to me as if some name of a creature from a video game... ": D

I'm not a native English speaker so I didn't recognize the name in the the first place... but after using google I realized that I already knew that little creature you were meaning! They are pretty interesting by their looks (and some features). : D
