Description
In part I was just reminding myself of some anatomy, since I seem to have driven it all out of my head.Josh's Houndoom, nominally Fang, was part of a back alley fight ring in Saffron, when TR was busted and Josh forced to flee along side them he ran into Fang hiding under a van, the Houndoom was near death with a number of bad wounds, Josh took the Pokémon with him.
Now named simply Houndoom, he still bears the scars of those days:
his collar scales are all but missing as are the patches on his legs, the scales which make up his horns and back ridges were prised up when he was growing for form dangerous spikes.
Josh broke his old handcuffs, originally kept for sentimental reasons, to give Houndoom fore-paw rings again.
Josh's Houndoom is highly recognisable and along with his Rapidash he is considered one of Josh's iconic Pokémon, because of his past he is considered possibly dangerous.
Dislikes Pokéballs but will put up with them so long as Josh is in control, anyone else picks up that ball and he'll break out of it, won't put up with other forms of capture.
Reluctent to flee from Police Growlithe.
Wary of strangers but puts up with them if Josh is happy.
Josh is boss.
The Houndour/Houndoom in the comic are kinda supposed to be the adverse form of the Police Growlithe/Arcanine.
They have very short fur, are narrow and skinny, they often seem agressive or jumpy even when friendly, they have long narrow fangs and their paws are almost cat like, only far more exaggerated, unlike Arcanine which use their claws as cleats, Houndoom keep their long curved claws up out of the way, almost adjacent to the ground. Their impressive claws and fangs as well as their infamous fire and fear inducing howls put them at odds with the image of Arcanine, the big, strong, bulky, fluffy and friendly looking 'good guys'.
The Houndour line is traditionally used by the Johto branch of Team Rocket.

Sort of, a cats claws rotate upwards and back, into the flesh of the paw, the Houndooms pretty much do the same but don't hide within the paw, they're there just out of the way so when they run they don't wear them down, this makes them poorer runners than Arcanine but when they do catch something they're not so easily shaken.
Pokémon genetics aye? *rolls eyes* though since Houndoom and Arcanine are both canine (okay, a lot of people see feline in Arcanine but I can't, I just can't, stripes do not a cat make... despite the origin of the design... ahem...) so I guess if they weren't too diverged from each other they could breed, though... Arcanine are 2 foot taller than Houndoom so better make sure the Arcanine is female or the poor Houndoom is gonna hate those puppies.

I can see that.
Aye. Wouldn't go breeding a...Skitty with a Wailord even if the game tells me I...they... can... *cough* I've always seen Growlithe/Arcanine as canine types, Growlithe's species is written 'puppy pokemon' after all and I consider Houndour/Houndoom their second gen counterpart of sorts. I decided it might be possible, I'd have to explain Crunch instead of Bite somehow anyway.
And yes, one of the very few things that actually make sense in the game is offspring's species being determined by female part of the equation. I figured he might still be slightly smaller than the 'purebred' one though.

That's a sweet idea, making slight alterations in their physical appearance, I mean breed to very different looking dogs together and it's not often you get just a mini version of one or the other is it?
I wish they'd put more... sense into the breeding system, I mean I could see all feline types being in one egg group: Persian, Delcatty, Perugly, Luxray etc... and all canine types... all reptilian/dragons but... Feraligatr can breed with Abomasnow? I mean I know from the waist down it doesn't look like a tree but I dunno I think that is really WEIRD, part of me wants to turn it into a reptile that just looks a bit like a tree, which could look pretty cool, but the cold temperatures thing throws me off.

Yes, there would probably be some differences in build and capacities as well. Actually, I'm wondering more about markings on normal Growlithes right now. I mean, in real life it would be difficult to find two identical zebras or tigers and this is sort of true of all animals with any sort of pattern. So I keep thinking this should be true for pokemon as well, depending on environment and stuff...
Apparently Arcanine can breed with Krookodile, Arbok and Walrein. Because they are all in the 'ground' group. Don't ask me. It's really nice they tried to take such important thing as habitat into consideration, but what about...amount of limbs, for example? This whole system seems kinda lazy to me...

I been cursing my belief in that, I need to design a number of Growlithe for my comic which all have a different set of stripes and I'll need to stick with them XD also a particular Arcanine must have particular stripes, guh.
I wish it was something that was generated in game too though, like with Spindas' spots, I'd love to see other people's Growlithe etc... with slightly different markings, but I guess... do it for one or two and it should really be on any and all PKMN with markings like that, though most have solid colours anyway.
Arcanine... and Arbok?
...
Weird.
I'd say so, but it sounds like it started out as a lazy idea that rapidly got more complicated and silly, I was vaguely hoping it may have got changed with B/W but didn't really expect it to.

Looking forward to you posting some reference for them if you decide to draw one
Ye-es... I was trying to imagine that and kept coming up with something like Laocoön Group...so maybe I'd better stop.
Sorting them all according to shape could be rather painful, not to mention there would be less opportunities to inherit stab-ed moves.
With 600+ Pokemon it's probably too late to do anything anyway...though I don't see how it would be more time consuming than generating so many Spindas...

superb rendition! excellent muscle tone and structure to the entire piece! the way youve added in the houndooms features into the dogs anatomy is also really good, top notch all the way round, especially for a sketch
