Although Nina had done her best to ignore some of the league's trainers and their methods when it came to capturing pokemon, witnessing two trainers tear away wild growlithe pups from their mother, whom they had chained and beaten, was the straw that broke the camel's back and Nina's tolerance.

Unorthodox in practice, Nina could barely remember beating the two strangers bloody, and they her - the tradition of pokemon battles forgotten in her rage. All three ended up hospitalised and the league was eager to hush up the incident, keeping it as far below the media's radar as possible. Of course, some details still leaked out and the content they lacked only fuelled Nina's frustration with the league's traditions. The conflict had been labelled an 'unfortunate misunderstanding between trainers' with the abuse the wild pokemon had suffered had not even been mentioned, let alone acknowledged.

Once discharged, Nina cut all ties with the league, abandoning them and the sickening practices they insisted on following; instead she spent her time wandering the family home, listless and without a goal. However, that changed when her father accepted a contract with Union City following a devastating pokemon attack upon its residences. Being a welder, his services were strongly desired in order to start rebuilding Issho's capital. At first, Nina was pessimistic when her father mentioned his intention to leave Galar - but he mentioned an interesting group that stood in defiance against the league's traditions. Painted poorly to the public, certainly, but Nina knew that people tended to hate what was different - and anything was better than resuming her stale lifestyle or turning back to the league with her tail tucked between her legs.
