I realize this is old, but in case you may want to update it there are actually four stages of shading (not just three). You forgot reflective light. It's usually taught in your first drawing class.

You are very welcome, and of course it is possible! More artists than you like use a mouse only - it just takes a little extra patience because the lack of pressure sensitivity.

Awesome tutorial! Gives a little bit more than just the basic colour theory than most of the tutorials I've seen on dA. Very useful indeed.

Thank you for this great turtorial.
Still, there are some things I'm trying to figure out: First, on the color wheel, yellow is opposite to purple. In painting software like GIMP, MyPaint, etc. yellow is opposite to blue. In MyPaint, where you have the possibility to display the complimentary colors, also blue is the complimentary color to yellow, not purple. Why's that? Which color wheel is "wrong"?
Second, when mixing colors, for example with the smudge tool, yellow and blue don't mix to green; in fact they don't mix at all, the hue value simply jumps.
I assume that I am misunderstanding something... can you help me understand these things?

There is actually multiple types of colour wheels, which is why it may seem like things are all over the place. There is your basic colour wheel, that includes only primaries/secondaries/tertiary colours and generally will not show colours such as cyan, bright purples, pinks, and your more-so "neon" colours. In this case, it would be red-green, blue-orange, and yellow-purple.
However if you use the full spectrum of colour, and this is typically the colour wheel that is used. Then the colours match up to be red-green, blue-yellow, orange-cyan, purple-yellow/green.
But whatever the colour wheel that you choose to use, all you need to do is draw a straight line across to see which its opposite is.
The problem with the smudge tool is that it is not a MIXING tool, it simply mushes the two colours you have together and doesn't actually physically mix the colours to create a new colour. Try using one layer of yellow and then use a low opacity of blue over top, that is actually mixing the colours. The difference is that you are forcing the colours to layer onto each other rather than pushing them up against one another.
Hope that somewhat helped!

Hey, thanks for your reply!
I just did a quick test with GIMP portable, using separate layers. Result was the same as if I painted or smudged on one single layer...
I shall do more testing on that, when I'm back home from work. Thanks again!

I haven't tried GIMP before... maybe download a trial of photoshop and see if things are any different/easier for you?

Yeah it does, for this part of the tutorial I purposely left it out. Beginners don't need to worry about it all that much until they are comfortable with the idea that things have value.

I've been looking for something like this for a very long time, especially in combination with shading in complimentary colours. This is very very useful, thank you very much for sharing.

Looks good.
Can get a color wheel that can make the different types of color schemes easy to see. I have one and use it a lot.
