If you have read the last volume (or was it the second to the last volume
) of Fruits Basket I know you'd understand...Kyo's mother killed herself and Kyo's dad accuses Kyo of her death... But as he grew older, Kyo realized that his mother's death was never his fault after all...
Parents should accept who their kids are... Kyo's parents kept accusing Kyo of their miserable lives... And that was wrong...

And yes, his dad was very horrible!!! I dunno that much about his mother (since she died before the story started) but she was a real fake... She hated Kyo but hid her true feelings... Her suicide was the result of her contained feelings...
