Description This is what I spent the month of July on. I'm not happy with how the arms turned out, and a few other things, but I learned from it. Here's all you need to know to draw me, plus a few things that you probably don't need:

Name: Shim-dar Shaul
Classification: Dragon
Family: Spirit Dragon
Species: Shimar
Form: Ornithopodian Westerdrake

The Shimar dragons (named after the land in which the first kindom of man was built according to Abrahamic scriptures) are spirit creatures who, under normal circumstances, are without definite form. However, each holds an avatar that is unique to a lineage template. Shimar dragons, though polymorphic and as such very different in appearance, are all the same species. Appearance differs based on family lineage and spiritual (and when applicable - ecological) niche. Physical manifestations are primarily symbolic.

Shaul is a dragon I developed as my personal identity based on my most basic view on dragons I had from an early age. He is a member of dragons with a dinosaur-like appearance, being quadupedal in form and capable of two legged movement. Unlike true ornithopods, the westerdrakes take the form of western dragons, having shoulder-mounted (usually feathered) wings, long serpentine body, pointed claws and teeth, and have an omnivorous diet. Warm blooded and of a stocky build, these creatures are terrestrial, preferring wet climates and tolerant of a wide range of temperatures. Much of their physiology is ancestral, meaning that they have characteristics that no longer suit them for their current behaviors. Other than that, physiologically they can be likened somewhat to bears. Size ranges from slightly larger than humans (measuring to the dragon's shoulder; standing on hind legs) to slightly smaller than something much bigger than that.

Diet: Primarily piscivorous. Rear-facing teeth are designed for capturing prey such as river fish. Sometimes forage for soft things that don't require chewing, something their jaws alone are not equipped for. Developed from a predatory diet. (Ancestral)

Wings: Despite having powerful wings, neither males nor females are capable of using these for flight after adolescence. (Ancestral, though territorial young matriarchs and nomadic males find them to good use.) Their great mass simply disallows for flight using conventional physics. Wings are primarily for temperature regulation, protection, and display. The feathered wings of most members of this form class gives the wing membranes greater protection from cold temperatures, making these among the most successful Shimar of cold climates. Feathers are indeed modified scales, and these are no exception, the transition being more evident on the wing forearms as they gradually become more elongate and flexible.

Feet: Weight bearing. Despite having a diet of primarily aquatic origin, the feet are sparsely webbed on the rear limbs, and not at all on the front (in most individuals). Front feet have two semi-opposable digits that bend at an angle to the wrist, towards the center of the cleft for the two center digits. This can be used for grasping difficult objects. The center digits function as a shovel for digging, either for foraging or nest building.

Skull: Set with forward facing eyes. (Ancestral) Pointed snout with high-set, sealing nostrils. (Developed) Two unremarkable S-shaped horns (which are enlarged primary ear spines set high in the skull) adorn males with a small attached ear fin. There are a total of 3 ear spines in most male ear fins. (In females the horns are reduced to a short spine, the seconary spine being longer than the first. Also present is a small, additional ear spine not present in males. The fin membrane is set along these spines.) Powerful clamping jaws latch onto prey, teeth designed for grasping.

Coloration: Coloration is consistent with many aquatic animals, having a lighter toned underside to mask them from below against the bright surface and a darker backside to mask them from above. (Developed) This helps them in hunting for prey, which is a convenient trait for the short-necked males.

Body: Stocky, semi-serpentine structure. Having a relatively heavy structure in comparison with most terrestrial westerdrakes its size. (Developed) In cross section, oval and smooth, stretched vertically. Most apparent at the end of the tail where it nearly flattens at the tip. Tail is somewhat paddle-like for movement through water. Bouyancy is provided by a high body lipid content. (Developed)

Crest: All Shimar of this form have a crest of an unknown crystalline substance along the neck. Colors vary between individuals while number, size, and shape of crest components vary based on health, mood, and status. Crest is used for communication (usually of the previouly mentioned traits) upon an encounter with another creature of interest (friend or foe). The crest is generally laid flat along the neck and raised when a recognition event is triggered. When raised, the crest is elevated above the neck, connected by no physical means. Method this is accomplished is unknown.

Dimorphism: Males are more dense per unit volume having a greater muscle mass, but are smaller in size. Males have enlarged primary ear spines, which appear as horns. Function is uncertain. Females are larger and less dense per unit volume, having a greater lipid content. Females have a hornless, 4 spine ear fin with a longer snout, neck, and tail. Tail legth of females can be up to twice as long as that of males and tapers less toards the tip.

Shaul: Shaul is a spirit facet in a human body. Representative of peace, health, and happiness. Stands nine feet (about 3 meters) at the shoulder (on all fours). Weight class standard for his size. Emerald green crest with 7-10 "obelisks" and between 10 - 20 orbs. Ivory Plumage with golden feathers along the leading edge of the wing. Black patterning along the back and tail. This pattern forms a jagged crescent in profile on the leg (arch rear facing.) Along the neck (from the chin down) a pin, half collar, collar, and claw formation encircle the neck leaving it almost entirely black save for a white symbol of life along the throat. Golden plate scales along the forearms, foot, and wing shoulders. Keeled plates along the nose. Very laid back. Loves pie and other baked goods, sleeping, and being a general lump. Were it not for common sense, he would probably make me look lazy
