Description I noticed Catalyst has finally released the XTRO: Succession Wars ebook. My work on the book was finished over half a year ago but I had to sit on the art while it's release was delayed.

Here it is though and I'm excited to show it, a Marauder design that I collaborated on with Matt Plog. Turns out Catalyst was trying to redesign a marauder at the very same time I was publicly redesigning it, when they saw what I had done they pulled me in to help out. After we got the design nailed down Matt plog whipped up some great TRO line art of it and I came up with this painting, which turned out to be used as the cover.

Shown, a Free Worlds League Marauder-4X 75ton heavy mech going through live fire trials on the Ronin Inc testing fields. It uses special cooling jackets around it's blazers to keep heat in check.
Loadout:
2 Binary Laser Cannons
2 Short Range Missile 6's

Enjoy.

*Edit*
Thanks to ^3wyl and ^alltheoriginalnames for the DD. I'd like to again give a shout out to ~mattPLOG for the fun collaboration on this design. He's a great battletech artist.

I LIKE IT!

I think this is a better looking Marauder than the original Reseen Marauder. All it needs is the autocannon barrel over one of the side torsos. (Because over the middle would put it into "Harmony Gold sues" territory I'm sure.)

Not such a big fan of all the different tech junk Catalyst has been tossing out. I don't mind some new stuffβ€”the new variants of the PPC, for instance, are nice, and despite my original hesitance I am starting to warm up to MMLs a bitβ€”but the sheer amount of newtech is starting to get overwhelming.

Ah well, doesn't matter much since I absolutely hate how the "Jihad" was handled and I've pretty much cut my head-canon out at 3067 just to ignore it. Still love the art, and this is some damn good stuff.

Yeah it sucked to not have an AC in the load out, and even had to give up the bulging pod for it that I would place the SRMs in.

I like the redesign still has a bit of the old flavor but takes it off in an awesome new direction more fitting of the battletech universe

Overall, excellent quality of work. My only complaint is that the angle does not give much of a sense of how long, front to back, Marauder torsos tend to be. ANd that, I think, is more of a nit-pick.

While I am always going to be an Unseen Marauder fan, I must say this is flat out amazing - I love the re-design you did, the artwork and the coloring. What a fantastic job. Please keep doing more - cannot say again how much I love this

I love your Marauder designs, specially the Highlander one.
On this one, it's hard to see/judge the proportions of the lower and upper part.
The legs and crotch seem a bit too long compared to the torso with this angle. Compared to the highlander one (imo your best looking Marauder) the distance between hip and torso seem a bit much.
But don't stop making more Marauders please

They all use roughly the same proportions, though this one was tweaked a bit by order of the Catalyst art director.

I love this! Your Marauder keeps most of the original populations while being both original and contemporary with the other pre 3025 designs. All that it's missing is a dorsal gun and thats will be something we can add with hopes of Iron Wind makes a mini of this beast.

The boxy lower torso and arm joints placed above the hips does put your mind to the Mad Cat but that's for the better in my opinion. This only further illustrative the Timber Wolfs origins/inspiration.

And as always, amazing job with the colors and perspective. The perfecta of a great TRO cover.

It would be nice to see this as a mini, but it being an experimental design that never goes into production makes it a long shot. Maybe if enough people demand it

The Glaug pod is a cool mech, but it doesn't really fit well in the battletech (modern) style. While some people are attached to the old design, most will agree that it needed this face lift.

EvilCleric [2012-12-18 09:22:00 +0000 UTC]

So from what you've said the binary laser cannon is two lasers that have their fire controls locked in pairs. And this beast has two of them and with the SRM 6-pack that means it's a close in brawler....that thing would run so hot! Might as well call it the Sauna or Pressure Cooker!

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 2

Shimmering-Sword In reply to EvilCleric [2012-12-26 02:42:39 +0000 UTC]

Quite hot yes, though it does have special cooling jackets on the Blazers to lessen the issue.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 0

Heretic1311 In reply to EvilCleric [2012-12-18 13:41:36 +0000 UTC]

Nope, it has housings fused too and is essentially two large lasers firing through one barrel, saving the weight of one lasers barrel. Sadly, only the heat doubles, but the damage does not. But you can fire it like 2 single large lasers, so you effectively save weight.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Shimmering-Sword In reply to Heretic1311 [2012-12-23 23:16:06 +0000 UTC]

As shown visually here, it still has two barrels and fires them both together. While it only gains 50% more damage than a single large laser with double the heat, it puts all the damage on a single location. It's not a great weapon, but it serves it canonical purpose as an alternative to the PPC when supplies are short.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Heretic1311 In reply to Shimmering-Sword [2012-12-25 00:03:47 +0000 UTC]

True. Plus they can used like 2 normal large lasers for more damage at the sacrifice of spreading the dmg. Nice guns overall. Also, they where developed quite early, problem was the heat, since double het sinks were not invented at that time.
