Description
Here's the final piece I painted for the 3145 line of Battletech books, the print TRO cover.A continuation of the scene on the Field Manual cover, the Republic's defense of the starport continues into the night as forces withdraw. A Clan Wolf Warwolf foolishly closes with an Ares tripod only to receive a punch that tears out it's side. Simian Battle Armor swarm the Warwolf to ensure it stays down. A Night Stalker medium mech rushes in to aid in holding the defensive line.

I make it look cool because that's my job
I'm not even a fan of it myself.

An Ares isn't that powerful.

While there has been a great deal of hype surrounding each version of theAresΒ 'Mechs, they have roughly the same amount of weapons as can be loaded onto a 100 ton chassis and are outgunned by some Assault 'Mechs dating from the 3060s.Β

Yet they haveΒ way more durability and gain perks through their tripod and multi cockpit features that give them certain advantages. No where does anyone say these mechs are the ultimate machine, but I don't see a reason to trash on them either. They're a 130ton mech, you're gonna crap your pants fighting one
I've seenΒ people intriguedΒ around the tripod concept as far as their special abilities, but I've yet to see anything I'd call hype. Unless this is a phenomena you're seeing on the official forums, then I'll just say I try to avoid that place

That was taken from the Wiki, I should mention, meaning I think it's canon hype.

Haha, in that case it's a matter of literature vs tabletop abstraction. In fiction yes, they really should be that great, but a game must be balanced. The two forms shouldn't really be compared in that way.

I know, but they don't all seem that powerful. I mean, the armaments are numerous, but light.

I donΒ΄t really like the Ares, 130 tons, but not more weapons than a 100ton can offer. ItΒ΄s main pro is that it has 360 degree defense with the weapons in the legs and the free rotatable torso.
But the three-man-cockpit might make it a good command mech.

Yeah the cockpit setup gives it quite an edge, bonuses to a lot of it's dice rolls. 50% (or so) more durability over a 100tonner is also nice.

Definitely is, but itΒ΄s slow as hell. 32km/h i think, same as the Annihilator in itΒ΄s low-tech version.

The same way something with 2 legs walks, by shifting it's weight to it's planted feet while lifting another.

What's the advantage to this very awkward gait over a quad mech? Youtube videos of three legged robots show a very unstable walking experience.

Youtube doesn't have footage of mechs 1132 years in the future
Big mechs in general are a bad idea, but this is scifi, where we don't worry about the little things.

You really got the Tripod looking terrifying in this one, the whole scene just screams 'total warfare'Β

Indeed. Though so much of the lore has changed from what it was back in the day. Game mechanics might be close to the same, and I'm glad it's still moving forward with the TableTop and MechWarrior Online, but it just doesn't feel like *my* Inner Sphere anymore

Yeah. The issue for me has always been finding the print book. >.<
Affording it is a whole other issue, thankfully PDF's are a lot cheaper. >.<
But yeah.
It looks great. I love all of the little bits of graffiti you put on your Mechs.
The Quasimodo had, "Pew-Pew-Pew." if I remember.
But 'Stone-Wall' seems really apt for a mech like this. :3
