Description Here's yet another commission piece for sabresteen
If you're interested in commissioning some artwork from me, check out my journal here: shimmering-sword.deviantart.co…

This is a super heavy tank, naturally bigger than the previous Goliath.
Once again its main armament is a rail gun, though larger. Two remote machinegun pods provide close in support. Expanded missile launch systems provide ample indirect fire support over a large area.
On top of all of that its laser anti missile system has been amped up in power, with four defense pods and an additional large emitter pod added atop for engaging foes within line of sight.
To round everything off, smoke and airburst fragmentation launchers surround the hull, further improving defense against incoming fire and infantry attacks.

I love this design but I feel sorry for anyone that has to maintain those tracks. I'm also not too sure of it's ground pressure but don't mind me, I'm just being nit-picky haha.

If it uses enough light weight materials to manage not weighing 8 times as much an a modern tank, it's 8 treads might just hold it. I assumed they'd keep this thing away from mud and rough terrain though.

TheArisen01 In reply to Shimmering-Sword [2019-01-16 01:08:29 +0000 UTC]

With some dimensions we might be able to figure out what it's ground pressure would be. Basically the overall weight and surface area of the tracks.

TBH, it looks like it'd weigh more than the Maus. Do the track sections turn individually? Kind of like giant tires? That'd be pretty cool.

Haha, you could do a recovery vehicle based on the chassis because anytime something this large gets stuck you would need a lot of power to get it out. (All tanks get stuck)

I'm just a tank nerd and I love it when all the bases are covered.

I've been looking everywhere and now I've found it. This beautiful beast is a worthy successor to Halo's M808 and M820 Scorpion series of Main Battle Tanks. I can imagine that this is what a Scorpion Family Main Battle Tank would look in the late 26th or early 27th century's.Β

Tank goodness I found my way back to your page. Lovely tank man, glad I'm not going up against one in combat anytime soon. Is the turret manned in this at all, or is it robotic like the T-14 Armata? Somehow, I have a hard time envisioning grunting gunners opening the breech of the railgun and ramming a new conducting sabot between the rails. XD

Shimmering-Sword In reply to Mechanizoid [2017-10-10 18:23:26 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, definitely too heavy to hand load. There would be room to fit everyone in the hull, though there is access to the turret.

Had gone back to Goliath's picture to check it and it seems that they use different tracks(Goliath - 6 bottom wheels per track, Behemoth - 7). I'd say that it's a bit wastefull. And cutting whatever sensor that is into a frontal glacis is just barbaric. Why would you ever do such a thing instead of adding them on top of armor(same goes with Goliath's headlights. Just brutal.)
Another question is secondary armament. Isn't 2 GPMGs too little(even if you add some sort of laser capable of being offensive)? Give it at least a coaxial with separate movement like on Goliath. And maybe switch guns to 12.7mm gatlings(get rid of infantry and aircraft with raw volume of fire) or 20mm autocannons(or shrapnel).
But overall it's perfect
P.S.:A bit of an insolent question. Do you plan on doing any art on Expanse or Warhammer 40k?

Shimmering-Sword In reply to Arklyte84826 [2016-11-20 09:56:03 +0000 UTC]

Ultimately most of the armor effectiveness and wheel issues come down to what defines my art, practical looks, but not at the expense of "cool factor". I could easily design an effective looking tank, but it'd be boring.
The two turret mounted guns could easy be 50cal, even stubby 20mm. And that laser system is quite powerful, what it can't instantly start melting the interior of, it can easily blind and disable. Shouldn't be too complicated to have it auto dazzle and burn out an enemy vehicles sensors and view ports, then start working away at a crew or mobility kill.
This would definitely not be a front line tank, more a mobility platform for its main gun and missile system to provide ranged fire support. It should be able to engage over the horizon. If it's near the front, I'd expect it to be screened by some smaller units such as the Goliath.

That Rail gun most to some serious damage to armour. The tracks on it remind me of the Mammoth Tanks from C&C.

In general railguns hit with so much power you'll never have any hope of stopping it. Modern armor can't even withstand a normal sabot penetrator. Once that sabot is moving so much faster, armor development will never keep up.

Best I can say is compare one of its tracks (note it has 8 total track bands) to those you'd find on an Abrams. Of course the Abrams track is longer, but the height/width is there.

My greatest issue is when the turret turns, it will hit the raised track armor in the front.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Shimmering-Sword In reply to someguysname [2016-11-19 10:11:04 +0000 UTC]

Yep, it's definitely not fully thought out lol, though getting a huge turret on a chassis is tough without making it boring and flat. If anything, the turret allows it to finely aim its massive main gun at long range targets. Treat it like a heavy tank destroyer.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

someguysname In reply to Shimmering-Sword [2016-11-27 07:07:26 +0000 UTC]

That ate three other tanks. You could solve the boring issue by making the base more interesting, unless you're going for the general military look with geometric shapes, you could try slimming down the front and change the tank into a six-point track mount. Would also provide more stability for the monster of a main cannon and provide a multi-capable base for extreme range artillery or a remote drone carrier. Then again, as the tank gets bigger, so does the target painted on it. Though it's sad no one tries to implement a better recoil dampening system for tanks, the reason they keep getting bigger. Then again, the recoil for a rail-gun is even worse. Should probably add in a caution to never stand near the barrel during firefights, 7k degree Celsius tends to melt people. Rail-guns give that off in the form of a plasmic muzzle flash due to friction along a barrel. Not going to hide that from thermal, though it would probably blind someone using it. Kind of like a flash-bang to NVGs. Anyways, to make anything more unique and interesting, it's always good to step away from normal design and start from scratch. Though interesting won't work all the time in the real world, life just hates things that only look interesting. Sorry about this mess of a reply, I tend to add in random bits of realism to my suggestions.

I definitely like keeping a strong air of realism when I can get away with it. That balance of familiar with scifi makes things feel more believable.
