Description Here's something different for you guys, some of you may find it helpful in visualizing my setting.

A map of all colonized space within my original scifi setting known as the Rangers Project or "The Protectorate Wars".
This was quite tricky to come up with, as several factions are based around popular constellations. However, pretty much all star maps are spherically shaped based on our perspective from earth, not a top down perspective of our galaxy. I did the best I could with some basic math and understanding, but I'm sure the locations are still off in places D:

I used a National Geographic milkyway map as reference for building my own, and after failing to commission this map from him directly, used Norsehound maps as style inspiration.

Shown are general faction borders, along with central world clusters and main trade/transit routes.
In depth details on each faction are within my art book (almost finished at this point).
You can get in a lot of territory without going too far in our galaxy

I haven't decided yet on the use of ftl transmissions, but ship/object ftl is instantaneous, if limited in range. So courier ships can deliver communications rather quickly at worst.
If the Nat Geo map is anything close to accurate, Earth sits somewhat between the arms, so it's a race outward for the four larger factions.
The Isles Protectorate sits along Sagittarius randomly due to an ftl anomaly spitting their colony ship out there.

Hmm by the lay out of the powers here, there is considerable potential for mayhem.  Would be curious to know the background stories for each state at some point ^.^  As for the accuracy of the map, that's something you can find tune over time if you need to.

I definitely wanted to avoid the usual neat borders and faction splits so many scifi settings have. My book has some basic descriptions on them, and stories on the formation of a few.

This is really cool, well done. It would be interesting to see descriptions of each faction's beliefs and politics.

There are roughly 1-3 paragraphs describing each faction in my book. It's nothing too deep

Not a game, it's my own setting.

Dang.  For scale, the Battletech Universe is barely 900ly across.

Haha yep. I didn't want to jab at it, but the Inner Sphere is quite tiny. I'm not versed enough in astronomy and star systems to know if that amount of space can actually contain as many usable planet holding star systems as BT shows. And then, my map is tiny compared to other settings, like Star Wars using almost an entire Galaxy.
