I kinda assumed that it's like moving a heavy sofa into another room; moving a spell into existence. Requires physical/mental effort.
At least it's not just pronunciation as implied by the Harry Potter series, that always struck me as a little silly.

What defines a hard spell? The amount of effort and energy it requires from the caster is what defines how hard a spell is if the fanon and the canon are anything to go by. In theory unicorns have an unlimited pool of magic but can only use so much of it before they get too tired to use it or use so much that they completely drain themselves of magic and have to wait for it to regenerate.

Spells require a lot of mental technique. The more parts of the brain you have activate, the more unusual the ways you have activate them, and the more complex the sequence of mental flexes you have to make, the harder the spell. That answer yer question?
