Yes it's true, new monthly tutorials are now available via my Patreon

Over the past three years I've done loads of successful commissions, and have commissioned others successfully as well. I have never had an issue with my transactions because I did my research before I started, and asked others who were doing commissions themselves how they were managing. However, not everyone has the time to go and note everyone (or, if you're getting noted, you may not have time to answer inquiries constantly)! So for your perusal and reference, here are some helpful tips to help you get started with taking commissions on DA.

This tutorial is more for people who offer commissions, but I have a few words for those who take them as well:

- Do your research. Make sure you're getting art from a reliable artist!
- Art costs money. Don't haggle down, its insulting. Don't forget, you're also getting free advertising when they post it to their gallery (for example, who here doesn't know Audley 's Castor ;3 )
- Don't be afraid to pimp the artists who did good work for you! Here is my list!

Raraarrar you know the drill, feel free to comment w/ questions if you got em, thanks for reading etc

The pics in the icons are mostly from the LJ random image generator, they're (c) to the internet, I suppose XD Except for Kash, he's (c) Geico.

oh my god! I've been waiting for somebody to do this kind of tutorial!! ; o;

thank youuu!!
it's really helpful!!

but I have a question about how to send the drawing... or plushie (Imake plushies too)... cause the post office charge me 92 pesos argentinos (30 dollars approx) and that's too much!!! Nobody would buy me if that's the price of sending it... plus the price of my work ; _;

could you please help me??

shingworks In reply to Horoholikka [2009-03-21 18:10:21 +0000 UTC]

Hmmm... Well, the commissioner should always pay the price of the shipping! Maybe its cheaper to send it through some service like UPS or FexEx, if you have that? through the slowest service they offer, since the ones that take longer seem to cost more. I really couldn't say, since I'm not familiar with Argentinian shipping :C Or, just limit the plushies to local customers so the cost is not so high

I'll try to find out what to do...

since every persond that has asked me for plushies are not argentinian :C

I looked at your page, and WOW, love the stuff you do!
Do you do any digital? You wouldn't need to ship anything, but if that isn't an option, maybe tell your commissioners about your dilemma, they may help out.

what if my prices are like, $10 for a full illustration in color, bg included... and I still get NO ONE to comission me?

I'm a bad artist, aren't I? D:

shingworks In reply to Engelen [2009-03-21 13:46:35 +0000 UTC]

Or maybe you're offering too much for too little price and people are afraid XD Like buying a car for $10, you'll wonder whats wrong with it...

Oh no! Well, it certainly doesn't help with the economy being so bad... maybe offer lower prices to a random person if at least 5 people get one? or another incentive?

I've been writing a lot of essay the past couple of weeks and I always get nailed on the transitions between paragraphs so it just stuck out to me, and now I've gotta say, you did a good job on the transitions! It makes the tutorial flow along at a good pace and keep the reader interested! 83

I foresee a DD for excellent tutorial-making! ;3

I think I have the quality... but not the watchers to do commissions. :/ I tried starting once but nobody took the bite.

Since then I've kinda started lurking on DA instead of posting... and of course that's only made things worse.

Yeah, you have to put yourself out there XD A good place to start is trading with others or making gift art, thats a fast way to gain friends

XxTruthorDarexX In reply to ??? [2009-03-20 11:47:36 +0000 UTC]

Hey, this may sound like a really stupid question...but do you send the actual piece of work to them...or do you scan it in and send it to them via here? Sorry... it's probably really obvious >_<

👍: 0 ⏩: 2

shingworks In reply to XxTruthorDarexX [2009-03-20 15:07:59 +0000 UTC]

Well, I mostly work digitally, so I email them a hi-rez piece when I finish and then tweak it if they aren't 100% happy. After they like it I post the lo-rez version to my DA somewhere. For the few traditional pieces I did I charged an extra $5 to ship it to them if the commission was under 30$, and shipped it for free if it was over $30 (unless they didn't want it, in which case I just kept it!)

XxTruthorDarexX In reply to shingworks [2009-03-23 13:21:07 +0000 UTC]

FelixTheAnimator In reply to XxTruthorDarexX [2009-03-20 14:14:07 +0000 UTC]

I think she said in the tut... Mostly just via here, unless it's over 30 dollars/big deal/specifically request snail mail for the original...
