Oh damn, oh shit
Its tutorial time 8D Cuz I have nothing else on my plate, obviously (I'm lying). Anyways I was feeling like not working on comics so I did this. As always, feel free to trace or whatever you need to do. Sorry if it is less in depth, this is more about the shapes and how to arrange them on the face vs an exhaustive listing of a bunch of details. Hopefully this will give you a place to begin so you can make your own variety, instead of having to rely on others and reffing (if you even need the help).
I'd like to add, this is exactly how I draw faces. If you like that and want to emulate it for some godawful reason, go ahead, I guess (though I strongly advise you to develop your own style). But hopefully the principles are basic enough to be applied to any style you like.

I love this tutorial. I have been using this tutorial as practice for the past 3 weeks, and now have developed my own style that I've been searching for, using your head shapes. (I use my own eyes) Thanks, and keep making amazing tutorials. However...I don't think there's many more that you can make!

Haha, well I believe Avatar was written and developed by Americans, which technically makes it American animation and not Japanese anime.

oh,so only Japanese stuff are anime? :/ well, I do admit some anime made by the Japanese are AWFUL...but that doesn't mean they all stink, hahahahaha.. and Avatar does look anime-ish to me, hahaha

That made me laugh. Thanks. And great tutorial!

You really don't like anime, do you? l= I pity you...not being able to find the differences within any kind of art style...Well, these faces are very constructive and different. I like it. =3

shingworks In reply to Melted-DryIce [2009-04-13 01:29:57 +0000 UTC]
Haha, I used to like it a lot. But its hurt my art a lot more than it ever helped. Although there is a lot of room for variation, most anime is so stylized that its nearly impossible for a beginner to learn anything but mistakes when trying to emulate it. So I have sort of a vendetta against it now, lol. But thanks for checking out the tut!

I draw anime style myself, and am often fed up with the shovel shaped faces
However, I'm still a nooby, and whatever I can master right now is wonderful to me
I wish to someday make each face look different, but it's whatever I can do for right now I suppose

i don't know if i've commented before, your tutorials are very unique but they are great in number, too. I wanted to say thank you for posting this and taking the time to create a tidy and well-thought out tutorial. I'm looking to break away from that precious, shitty anime style and your breakdown here of the face in a more... versatile style than the ugly shovels. XD I don't feel so intimidated now, so thanks!

Great tutorial! I've been looking for a good face one for a while but all of them are either realism (I don't have that much skill) or anime (which would be conforming to the man.)
Awesome job! I will definitely use this C:

Hehe, thanks! I agree, it gets annoying finding the right fit. Just try a bunch of different stuff and keep the parts you like until you've stolen from enough people to call it your own "style" X3

Huh, I'm surprised you actually have a tutorial that didn't get a DD (backhanded compliment of the day.) ALL of your tutorials are great. They go far beyond generic poses and all into different angles and actions. The faces are all great, of course, but I just have to say... I think you've drawn the cutest skull I've ever seen. I took one look at it and instantly thought, "Aw, it's smiling at me!"

Haha, thanks XD I'm glad you like my tutorials so much. And skulls are pretty cute when you think about it, all big eyes/sockets and smiles :3
