Another tutorial Theres a lot of text but I tried to make my system as clear as possible. As usual you can copy or use any of these drawings freely, but be sure to read the tut as well! As I recommend in it to ref from photos or real life over other people who might have made mistakes (not me of course, as I never make mistakes) (lol). Enjoy!

Haha, yeah, no substitute for arm control... but if you want to cheat, just work at a large size and shrink down to the final size. That will take out a lot of the wobbliness and make your lines look crisp.

I have to say...I thought I was decent at drawing hands until I did a little exercise using this tutorial. WOW! Really is amazing how much you can learn from just taking a few steps back and reanalyzing the basics!

I tried your hand tutorial and I got this far:
Β
Which is SO MUCH BETTER than I've ever done before.
I am like foaming at the mouth with the quality difference. Your tutorial is a Godsend.
BUT
I am having the trouble that the hand looks all kinds of wonky when I take the drawing guides layer off. Which I'm having trouble showing because my computer crashed and flattened my image.... Which means I lost the guide I just worked so hard making. >_>;;
But here's the result when I erase the guides:
Β
It just looks off to me. What am I doing wrong?
Any tips will be so appreciated.

Hi! First, thanks for attaching images! I didn't know you could do that. Second! The thing that makes it look wonky is that you're now missing the parts of the underdrawing that made the hand look like a hand. Namely, the lines that form the muscles/ meat under the thumb, and that other oval under the fourth and fifth fingers. The way to get around that is to replace those lines somehow.... you can either replace them by adding in new lines that follow those curves (this can be those bold lines like you have above, or looser feathery lines), or you can imply the volume via shading. Personally I would feel ok with putting more lines inside the hand to show the volume. You can also make the wrist a bit thinner to push the hand-ness of the hand even more. Hope that helps!

Thank you so much for your detailed review.
It was quite handy to say the least.

But I'll certainly try that!

I had to make it B&W because the skin tone I saved it in is hard to see.

This is a great tutorial. I often tried reffing my own hands but my hands are rather... odd. My ring finger is almost as long as my middle, and both my pinkies bow out in the middle then curve back inwards and my palms are wide and when measured are near exact squares lol my hands have personality but sadly not normal enough to be referenced for normality

this tutorial is great! but i am curious, when you draw hands do you actually draw these weird circles and stuff inside them before drawing the hand around it, Β if not did you ever. im wondering if this is really the way to learn or if just plain trying to draw hands is better

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

shingworks In reply to Lisa1981 [2013-11-17 19:24:33 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, drawing those circles and lines is really helpful, and make everything easier... you can think of it like using a model for draping clothing, or blueprints for building a house... having a guide saves you a lot of time and makes everything you draw way easier and more consistent. They also give your drawing natural volume... it is very hard to free-draw a hand that has all the volumes of a real hand, but way easier to trace the outline of a bunch of circles that represent the muscles and volumes of an anatomically correct hand.

Love this! Although, I feel like the "anime paw" look can be fine, so long as the artist is still following anatomy. Things start to melt and fall apart when the artist just puts a hand-ish shaped blob with holes (as you show in your example).

That being said, I'm a pretty avid user of the anime paw. I just feel like showing and outlining all the fingers can get awfully busy. Alas - opinions, opinions.
