Follow me Facebook • Facebook Art Blog • TumblrThe oldest form of the mermaid in mermaid mythology is the goddess Atargatis from Syria. A famous statue of Atargatis shows her as a woman from the waist up and a fish from there down. All sea goddesses inherit the sea's qualities. Just as the sea could be gentle and nurturing or violent and deadly, so could they. These are the same contradictory qualities we see in mermaids to this day: beautiful, cruel, tender, loving, destroying, etc. In a larger sense this is man's view of nature. The mermaid is nature herself.
If you haven't guessed already mermaids and vampires are my favourite mythological creatures
All stock purchased and details painted.
Tip: When creating a mermaid don't use those Poser Pro tales unless you're using a Poser model too, otherwise it will look really fake. I always search for fish photos for the tale, you just need to mold the fish photo to the models legs. Koi fish stock is the best for this, since they have the most destinct scales.

Wow when I saw this I was so shocked! This is beyond amazing and pretty! No words really do described how I see this but I do believe it's much better than the recent daily DDs, this should be a DD. Your talent on this is incredible.

Personally, I don't recommend scales all over her body, including her face. But I do love how her red makeup and red hair contrasts with her blue-ish green gish tail.

I greatly appreciate that you depicted a mermaid as a mythological creature and not a Disney spin-off.
This is a wonderful piece.

Though I like Disney, mermaids are so much more intersting on the mythological point of view and everyone learned a bit more about them now

The way you described mermaids (loving yet deadly) very well fits this picture. Atargatis looks lovely...and creepy. o.o

This is beautiful. I love the glow around her. A few suggestions, if you don't mind. The scales on her right arm need to be faded more at the bottom. I can see a very clear line where the texture ends. The texture around her breasts, I can see the texture overlay in the cleavage crease. Either darkening or fading should fix the problem as it doesn't seem to be following the curves her of flesh. The shadow separating her face from her neck should be more pronounced as well. I love the scales on her fin, it feels very real. Bringing a bit of that depth into maybe a selective couple of the other scales in her upper body might really benefit this as well. Though you'll have to experiment with that.
