Description
Like so many Sly fans, we like to take characters and rearrange them to our own liking; even if it doesn't strictly follow the canon.Among the biggest changes ever done to a character by many fans alike is Neyla. Namely due to the fact that she's...well...gone. XD In Sly 2 it's pretty apparent she went down along with Clockwerk.
Of course many of us as fans like to write it that A.) she either survived or B.) she somehow came back via time.
I just simply have it that the Clockwerk machine expelled her body, and that she was washed downstream half dead....but pretty much alive. (One of my own creations finds her and takes her in.)
Prior to the Clock-La incident however; and prior to her partnering up with Carmelita; Neyla's early life is only described as such: she was born an orphan in New Delhi and she worked her way up in school and the ranks when she somehow made it over to Europe to become part of the police force. What happens inbetween isn't explained and I'm sure it was left vague on purpose.
It is through my own interpretation (and perhaps others' as well...I don't really read fan fiction) that she was adopted in New Delhi and brought over to Europe. Who adopted her and who raised after her orphan years in New Delhi isn't officially explained. So I will try to....from my own unofficial perspective that is.
Neyla's life as an orphan in the streets of New Delhi was rough and miserable; as one might expect for a small child living in the most poverty stricken areas of India. (Slumdog Millionaire helped paint a vivid picture of this.) She was passed on from one owner to another and they all did the same thing to her: use her as a means to get cash and other goods from New Delhi's wealthiest and tourists. Neyla would use her cute "innocent" orphan appearance to get money from them. Only she wouldn't keep the money. Her owners would take it from her and would only reward her for her long tiring days of going around collecting money with a few meager scraps of food and a few hours sleep. If it was discovered she pocketed some of the money, they would more than likely beat her or make her work back the money.
Then one night, when it was discovered she was pocketing some of the money she earned, just before her owners would give her the thrashing of a life time, a mysterious figure intervenes and beats them up instead. He takes the money she earned from them and gives it to her. This figure was a lion inspector from Interpol named Ignatius. (At this time he was about the same rank as the current rank of Ms. Fox.) Upon observing Neyla, he took her in and gave her food and a warm place to sleep. He explained to her that he had lost his wife and daughter earlier in his life; and that he was in India to help track down their killers. Having found them earlier he then explains how he happened to hear Neyla's predicament and stopped by to intervene. He then offers her the chance of being adopted by him, and live her life as his surrogate daughter. Neyla, although hesitant at first because most of her owners showed "kindness" to her before showing their true colors, agrees.
Ignatius and Neyla return to France; where Neyla is introduced to her new home: a very clean and prestigious mansion. Over the years her father raises her and shows her kindness as if she really became his daughter. So it seems like Neyla finally found someone to truly care for her.
Over time Ignatius rose in the ranks until he became the Head of Interpol. Throughout this period he instructed Neyla in the ways of having the "Gift of the Silver Tongue." In what seemed like fatherly advice, he told Neyla that the world will always be full of people who will trick you and exploit you. To stay ahead of the game, you must use them before they use you. He always reminded Neyla of her life as an orphan in the streets; which no doubt harnessed her anger towards the world. He also explained how being able to manipulate will get you places; such as how he rose to Head of Interpol. He promised Neyla that she was destined for greatness if she could obtain it by all means possible; even if it was through deceit and dishonesty.
So Igantius essentially is a like a perverse Mufasa; his advice may seem wise, but it's really malicious and full of ill intent. But Neyla didn't question it because Ignatius was the only person in the world she admired and loved being her "loving" foster father.
So as she listened to him more; Neyla took it to heart and became the deceitful tigress we would come to know and love/hate in Sly 2. From her 'Homework Ring' in school to her betrayal of both Sly and Carmelita; it was all thanks to the "advice" she took from her father.
Of course there was also her issue of wanting to become immortal. Her father imprinted that on her too. He would often tell her that he was raising her to become more powerful than anyone. For all those who hurt her or used her; they would never touch again if she gained the ability to become immortal and all powerful. Ignatius also filled her head with "Dreams of Power" and he told her about the source of power hidden inside a certain 'criminal': Clockwerk. The power inside Clockwerk was one that many sought throughout the ages; and Igantius promised her she would obtain it so she would rise up and there would not be a being alive to touch or hurt her.
Ignatius of course did this for her because he "loved" her....or so Neyla thought. While Ignatius is the Head of Interpol; he is also the head of another mysterious organization. One that worshipped the power inside Clockwerk (and other beings throughout history) as the true source of immortality and absolute power. Igantius's raising of Neyla, was more or less his way of 'fattening her up for the slaughter.' He wanted to see how a normal being could handle such a power. But he knew there wouldn't be anyone out there willing to do so unless they were close to him. So he decided in the ned to use Neyla.
More on that later; that's just the basic jist of things.
Then of course there is the point that after the Clock-La incident; Neyla turns out to be alive after being expelled from Clockwerk's body. (Apparently she couldn't handle the power flowing within him.) Rescued by former assassin and my creation Mai Ling, she comes to find out later what Igantius's true intentions were.
And this is where she starts developing what I laid out here in this piece: her "daddy issues." The biggest one is how Ignatius raised her and showed her genuine kindness and love as if she was his daughter. Now she is beginning to see it as one big elaborate lie. That the 'Dreams of Power' he promised her was really for his benefit and not hers. That he used her.
But even as she discovers all this; she still sees him as the closest thing she ever had to a father. So in spite of being lied to; she still seems to love him. So Neyla's issues are really 'daddy issues.'
After explaining all this; it makes the humor of this pic a bit underwhelmed. There's a pretty dark story behind it.
And don't get me wrong; part of me did enjoy Neyla as a straight up Villain; and played her part well as the antagonist in Sly 2.
I guess when we have the freedom in our fandoms to write characters, there's room in there to include a "You don't know the whole story" scenario.
Like in the film 'Maleficent'; how did she become the 'Queen of Mean?' Who did her wrong? Well love did her in and it was from a man she feel in love with.
In this case though; it's Neyla's foster daddy: who brought her up on lies and false hopes in the guise of love and kindness.
I haven't drawn Ignatius yet; but I do plan on making him tall and lordly looking. Not so much diminutive like Ocatvio. XD Like he commands authority and respect despite the fact most of what comes out of his mouth is lies. Neyla truly learned a lot from him.
One thing's for sure; Neyla's got some real daddy issues to face. More than likely she's gonna confront her father again sooner or later. How she will feel when facing him again? Only time will tell.
Love Neyla's big eyes. She looks so confused and sad. ;__; If you don't sympathize for her, that's fine. What I wrote here isn't official; I made it for fun and wanted to give a richer back story to Neyla's origins and how big a role she'll play when being brought "back to life" so to say.
Also I mentioned my OC Mai Ling....she pretty much is Neyla's guardian, caretaker and foster sister. Mai isn't fully aware of Neyla's Clock-La stint; and Mai's got her own demons to face. But that's a whole nother story for a whole nother time.
Neyla belongs to SuckerPunch. Or Sanzaru should they ever bring her back.
Ignatius the lion and Mai Ling belong to me

ROFL! Tell me about it. ;D
Well I gotta say; I still think Neyla was a great villain; perhaps the greatest villain in the series next to Clockwerk.
But for my own sake; if I wanted to reintroduce her....I couldn't just have it be a rehash of her being evil again. I guess I'm putting a backstory to how she became evil and why she did wrong.
But will she live to see her redemption? Time will only tell.

I like that way of thinking.
Giving people a sound reason for their behavior based on previous experiences, mixed with a new light on the situation.
Now if only Sony would brighten up, and hire more folks like you...

Ah well I'm flattered. ;D But I would seriously love to work on a new Sly game; as a fan I would be dedicated to help make it great.
I figure that's the only sound way to bring back Neyla; a sound reason and a new light on the situation. I like most people accept her as dead according to the official canon. But canon can change. (Try saying that three times fast. XD)

I liked her as a villain, though in truth she probably is really dead since she took over Clockwerk's body.
Clockwerk, though, probably is alive, since his brain, more important than any other part, wasn't added into it. So since Neyla took over, makes once she died over him

shinragod In reply to DeviousCooper [2014-11-13 18:11:24 +0000 UTC]
She was indeed a great villain.Β
And officially I believe her deceased too. No real reason to bring her back in the series and fan demand isn't high enough. XD
Though because I just wanted to; I had her expelled from Clocks body during the fight between Clock-La and Sly.
Though that part about Clockwerk's brain; that on the Sly Wiki? Never remembered that mentioned.

DeviousCooper In reply to shinragod [2014-11-13 20:21:11 +0000 UTC]
It is mentioned only twice in the game, and it was the part arpeggio had taken. For the mysterious reason, he never added it to the body, so perhaps the reason Clockwerk didn't reawaken wasn't because the hate chip wasn't working or his soul wasn't connected, but perhaps the one organic part of him wasn't included.
That's merely my take
π: 0 β©: 1
shinragod In reply to DeviousCooper [2014-11-13 22:42:54 +0000 UTC]
Not a bad take and it's been a while since I played 2. (Most sly games I go through once or twice before moving on to other games or projects.)
I took from my perspective the 'soul' of Clockwerk and that there was a power inside of him many sought out for years since the quest for "Immortality" was part of Arpeggio's and Neyla's goals. Whether literal or metaphorical that was an aspect on Clockwerk I built upon; and one of the reasons in my own version Neyla partially survived.
Of course like I stated earlier; it's not official.
But that aspect you mentioned is curious since it perhaps means someone out there has Clockwerk's actual brain.

DeviousCooper In reply to shinragod [2014-11-14 00:18:22 +0000 UTC]
While I can't say much for my plans involving him, (and there are some good plans), I can say that too me the idea of a hate chip seems rather inefficient for someone like Clockwerk.
Is why I believe it was only used to keep his armor intact, and the later his brain, the only organic part left of him, is the real source of Clockwerk living. Makes since when you think about it.
Klaw Gang built Clockwerk, but left out the brain, so someone else could control it. So it's more of a shell than a living tjing.

You know for a character that was pretty much a last minute design for the first game, we sure come up with interesting ideas surrounding him.
From organic brains, to power sources, to even others' ideas of being a Cooper or being from the future....the ideas surrounding Clockwerk show we as fans still consider him the main antagonist of the series despite not being in the last two games. (Technically...)

I really liked Neyla's character in Sly 2. Well, I hated what she did, but she was a good character and antagonist to the Cooper Gang.
I don't know if they will bring her back. I liked how they ended her story, kind of ensuring that both her and Clockwerk would not come back. Buuut anything can happen in the Cooper Universe so I cannot be entirely sure ^^
This is such sweet drawing, and your backstory makes a lot of sense
π: 0 β©: 1
shinragod In reply to BrittanyTheAwesome [2014-11-12 02:57:56 +0000 UTC]
I still think this is why Sly 2 is my favorite of the entire series. Not only did it improve the mechanics of Sly 1; but it gave us a better story and two antagonists for the price of 1.
Part of me really likes Neyla bad; and she did her role as a villainess really well.
But it's true: anything could happen.
We as fans like to think of alternate ways it could happen. And you know what; alternate routes happen in the Marvel and DC comics all the time to our favorite super heroes and villains. So no reason why we can't do that with video game characters. ;D
So this is my alternate version of Neyla. And I did hope my backstory made some sense and I'm glad it does. ;D It's just the tip of the iceberg though. I want her "return" to signify something. I mentioned her "dad" is the head of another organization that worships the power inside Clockwerk. This of course will lead to bigger revelations; including those related to some of Sly's ancestors. So I wanted her return to be significant to the plot.
As it should be in future games should they bring her back.
Thank you for this awesome comment. ^^ I like Neyla both as a bad guy and as a...well...sort of good guy. More like an anti-hero. I'm not ready to make her Ms. Nice yet. XD

The improvement from Sly 1 to Sly 2 was freaking amazing. I loved Sly 1 but I wasn't able to play it until this year. This was after I finished the rest of the games so to have to change my gameplay style in the first game took a long time to get used to. Needless to say, I died... a LOT XD. I feel that Sly 2 was so great because of that specific gameplay style influenced the rest of the series along with the deeper storyline and plot twists.
Alternate routes really inspire the imagination. I don't read fanfiction, but I am up for hearing different interpretations and how we imagine what happens next when the canon story doesn't tell us. It makes the series more connectable when everything isn't directly given to us and forces us to believe an outcome.
Video games have become a lot more developed and in depth within the past 10-15 years, so why not think of them like books or movies? They're pretty similar and are getting much closer. Video games with a story and characters I find more interesting than games without one.
I believe that your version makes sense. It links to how she acted and how she would know the things she did. The way she treated Sly seemed like she had been trained and had been doing so for a long time. There would have to be a drive or past occurrence which would trigger that so it is very intriguing with your interpretation of it.
You're welcome. I liked how she deceived the Cooper and Klaww Gang.. well I didn't...but you know what I mean. That is exactly how she was meant to be portrayed. She deceived me as a kid because I didn't know she was bad.. but that makes it so effective. So much respect.

Yeah; the first Sly like many firsts of the series was no cake walk. It reminded me of the first Crash Bandicoot in that it was a little complex gameplay wise. While I did play Sly 1 before Sly 2; I played Crash 2 before Crash 1. So like you I had to adjust my gameplay style. And like you I appreciated the story progression in Sly 2 a lot more. I think one legitimate complaint people have with it is that you couldn't revisit levels like you did in Sly 1 or future Sly games. I do think Sly 2 is the more story oriented and driven in the series so I can forgive that.
I don't read fan fiction either; as I am more visual. This is why I don't really write it out either; I tend to impress more when I draw my ideas out.
We as fans like to be connected to a series. Even if what we write we take too seriously sometimes. XD I mean we're just having fun; let's not feel like we're "improving" a series here. XD
While I can accept most anything that is canon in the Sly universe; making a few adjustments that here and there is definitely not a bad thing; as long as one remains respectable to the characters.
Video Games have indeed developed a lot of complex plots over the years. Among my first exposures to a massively story driven video game was Final Fantasy VII. The twists and corners in that game still influence me to this day; especially since you come to find out that your main target isn't the real threat to the planet. Someone else is.
If it's written in a way that makes sense and pays tribute to the series at the same time; I say by all means go for it. Let your imaginations run wild. ^^
I guess I felt the freedom to do what I wanted with Neyla thanks to how I saw what they did to Maleficent this year. And while I do like they gave her a sympathetic story; I thought they made her too sympathetic. I guess I do like Maleficent mean. XD But nevertheless; it means we're given the freedom to re-write certain aspects of characters or fill in the gaps. Which is why there was opportunity to explore Neyla's character when the parts that happen between her orphan years and Sly 2 events were left vague and ridden with holes. So yes; I made it look like Neyla was raised to be like that.
Now from a simpler POV; it could be that she just felt angry at the world as an orphan and decided to sweet talk her way through life without anyone showing her. However; since I do plan on bringing her back and making her an unwilling ally; I felt a bit more needed to be done. Hence given her a foster dad to warp her mind.
I also like Sly 2 because of that. Unlike future plot twists to Sly; this one felt genuine and added a lot to the motive of wanting to get back at a villainess for wronging you. Neyla provided such.
That also brings me to her obsession with becoming immortal and how she felt she would get that through Clockwerk. Again; her foster daddy and who he is associated with.
It's rather fun to explain these things. And I do have fun with Neyla as a character given all this.
But I do admit....part of me does like her bad. And I still think she was one of the series' better antaognists.

I agree that it was slightly annoying that you could not revisit missions in Sly 2. But I enjoyed the fact that you could re-enter areas with different characters. Overall, I am very happy with how the series has developed over the years. So much has changed since Sly 1-4 in both the technology available and how gaming itself has been structured. I feel like i'm over-fangirling when I talk sometimes because I just go on about how much I love the development of the series. Excuse me if I do
Same here, I tend to connect better with visuals than text or scripting. I enjoy reading, but to actually see the ideas instead of just imaging makes it more interesting.
It's good to have a passion for video games I believe. it used to be seen as strange but I think with the development of entertainment/gaming industries in recent years it is becoming more accepted and a part of this generation. I think that the internet has a part to play also xD
I cannot say enough at how awesome it is to play games or be interested in a franchise. Not to the extent that it becomes your center of life of course, but as a potential to expand ideas and the imagination to what can be done and what we interpret within a fictional world.
I still need to see Maleficent, but I know enough about what happens to understand where you are coming from. I just thought now of how Discord acts in the latest season of MLP. Kind of redeemed, but not entirely acceptable of having to work with others. Sorry if this is kind of irrelevant, haha.
All of my agreement with what you say in your last paragraph. I liked pretty much all the villains in the rest of the games following Sly 2 (asides from Penelope, but that probably doesn't need mentioning), but none seemed so aggravating and effective as Neyla's betrayal from my own perspective.

Oh don't worry about fangazsming over something I care for too. I know I love talking about it with people as well; especially when it's in such detail as this.
I'm happy how it developed over the years. And I'd like to make one thing clear...I don't want a continuation of the Sly series so much as at least one last game to provide us with a satisfactory conclusion. (Before we fans bombard it with our own "genius." XD)
This is why I abandoned fan fiction. I'd rather take the extra time and effort to make something people can visually see and appreciate. I think also being an artist's site; that is to be desired.
Internet and gaming being made openly embraced by the public has indeed increased over the years. Yet it is the more M Rated games embraced by the public. I mean; I will not openly tell anyone outside this place I love Sly Cooper and make Sly Cooper fan characters. To them (and to me sometimes) it looks totally pointless and silly. But it's part of my hobby. And everyone needs a hobby. Hobbies keep us going I think; and I truly believe they help us live longer.
I never mean for it to be part of my life either. And yet I do find myself thinking about it a bit. Maybe because I got a needlessly long story I'd like to be told; and get people drawing my characters without me even asking. it's happened before. ;D
No, the whole thing in Discord makes sense too. Neyla's that way; while redeeming herself she is reluctant to play nice with her old enemies. Only through adversity, cooperation and teamwork does she eventually warm up to them...in a sense. And given their history....that's not an easy thing to do. XD
Neyla's betrayal was indeed the most effective in the series. Making her the perfect villain. All the more reason I'm continuously hesitant about showing the lighter side to her. It's like what they did with Maleficent; one of Disney's best villains.Β While many embraced her tender side; most all of us loved her as 'The Queen of Mean.' So yeah; let's just say at the very least; Neyla's redemption is a very slow gradual pace...and even in the end we're not sure if she's redeemed.

Haha, sweet. Sorry, I tend to be too self conscious sometimes. ^^''Β
I completely agree with a satisfactory conclusion rather than to an endless continuation of the Sly series. Even though it would be sad, the story doesn't need it and it would probably be the best business move instead of draining what is left from the franchise. Just because the series is finished, doesn't mean that it's forgotten and is any less important to us.
I understand about the gaming genre perspectives. I tell people that i'm a fan of video games and I will openly name Sly Cooper, Ratchet & Clank etc as my favorite titles, but I do understand and accept that they are not as preferred within the gaming generation rather than to more 'mature' titles. Especially with what I am studying (fashion), gaming does not go hand-in-hand. I think it's mainly with cosplay, I personally love cosplay but it is looked down upon with designers and industry professionals even if it is completely unrelated to what I am actually doing. It's pretty crazy. I don't just play Sly Cooper of course and play a huge variety of rated games, but I try not to hide what I enjoy most, which coincidentally mainly are in family-orientated franchises.
You shouldn't feel silly for liking something. There's a reason for why we enjoy a character or franchise and I just feel kinda sorry for the people who don't see that and miss the opportunity.
I guess there's a balance between how much something (a game in this example) means to me and how it affects my lifestyle. I think about games and storylines a lot, yet it doesn't hurt how I live and how people see me. I have learnt morals and perspectives through my hobbies (games, books etc.), I apply them in my life but in a way that opens possibilities and helps me progress and feel more confident in what I can do. ^^ They help my life, but don't define it.
Your portrayal of Neyla is very spot on and works well with what we have seen her do. The fact that she has the potential for good, yet holds her own personality linked to what she experiences and influenced to do makes it for a very interesting take on her character. It's best to leave the viewers questioning, it's intriguing and makes us think of her as a separate mind rather one than we can predict the outcome of. c;

All too often I see successful franchises claim that there will be an 'End All" story; like Halo 3, Metal Gear Solid 4 and God of War 3. But nope; because they sell so well another game is inevitable and is made to continue a story they SAID would be the final chapter. LIES!!! >
For Sly being not as successful a franchise, if they do indeed make another game that concludes the series then I believe it truly would be the end of the series. Actually; remember the final episode of SonicSatAM when we saw Sniveley rise from the wreckage with a red eyed ally (who I assumed was either Metal Sonic or Knuckles). Not long after the series was cancelled and we never saw what happened afterwards. However, at the very least we saw Sonic and Sally profess their love for each other and end their journey with a kiss. It is definitely something I'd like to see in the last Sly game: Sly and Carmelita going out the same way. (And this might just be me as a hopeless romantic; but perhaps a bonus trailer at the end showing Sly next to Carmelita...who now has a "bun in the oven." Way to go Sly. XD)
It's weird how the more you are exposed to the outside world and how other people react to something; they will either look down on what you love or deny they like it. ;D I do not openly tell people (with the exception of a few close friends) that I like games like Sly Cooper and I make fan characters for them. Me being an older guy; you think I would outgrow this stuff by now. But the truth of the matter is I was born too early. If we had Photoshop and games like Sly back when I was a boy I might have gotten it all out of my system. But as it is; I was in college when the first Sly game came out and I first joined Deviantart. Prior to that I only had internet for a few years. So I'm a late bloomer simply because I love stories and story telling; but had no means to share it with a wide audience back when I was a kid and about your age. so here I am; getting it out of my system. Now it's become both a habit and a hobby.
Mature games I feel also sell well not because of its content; but also because a majority of the mare competitive online player games that do provide plenty of replay value. I also theorize the reason story oriented games like Sly don't sell well is because people can just look up the cut scenes on youtube. In fairness the Sly games offer little in competitive online or replay other than trying to unlock everything. Most M Rated shooter games are still popular due to their competitive online gameplay. So there's that to consider too.
Strange how fashion looks down on cosplay. I see it as a rising form of expression in both terms of style and appearance. Of course if you ever saw the teenage culture in Japan; you'd think every day over there was cosplay day. XD So when studying fashion, what exactly do they enforce? Because like the gaming industry, I am sure fashionΒ is a continuously changing world trying to keep up and met the needs of consumers worldwide.
It's cool you don't make what you love a total part of your life but still get something out of it. Perhaps I make it too much of my life. But that's mainly because given my work schedule and sleep schedule and what little time I have inbetween, I got very little time to juggle it and balance it. There is so much I want to make and draw and tell people. But so little time, and often....little energy. Sleeping when I get home from work has become a daily habit of mine. Two to three hours naps are becoming the norm for me. All while trying to get newer ideas out. And if I do draw I can go well into midnight doing nothing but that. So it looks like my hobby has become part of my life due to schedule reasons. I wonder if there's a better way to control it all while trying to get my ideas across without simply writing them.
My love for Neyla as a character resurfaced very recently and I believe there is room to tell this side of her story. Fro ma fan perspective of course. Because by all means there is no real reason to bring her back in a future Sly title. (If any.) However, if her reason was actually part of a bigger picture that reached the ultimatum of a separate incident within the Sly universe, then it can be justified. The ends justify the means. In other words; I like Neyla but want to bring her back with a purpose that's integral to the plot. And so far the plot is very confusing. I'm still organizing it. But at the very least I would like to tell Neyla's origin story before getting into the real meat of the adventure. And by your reaction I'm on the right track. ^^
Like Maleficient, I intend to keep part of her personality in tact like she was in Sly 2. But not one that says "I'll backstab you later." She has someone with her now to keep her in check. (That being my OC Mai Ling.) Mai is essentially to Neyla what the Guru is to Murray. Having saved her Neyla kinda owes her; and conflicting feelings with her foster father really makes life "after death" so to say a little bit tricky. As is writing this story. Suc ha complex tale to tell. But it keeps me going'. With my art style and drive, I feel I can get this part told someday. when, I dunno. Just need to find the right moment to do so .^^

I won't say that Sly Cooper is not a successful franchise, but it was not as popular as franchises which started at around the same time (Ratchet & Clank, Jak & Daxter etc.) People know of it, it's just that most haven't played it... which I guess is the problem. I discovered Sly Cooper though the Ratchet and Clank 3 demo, it's just unfortunate that the series did not receive the recognition it deserved in the time of the PS2 generation. Maybe the fact that it is not as popular will solidly mean that the next game will be the end, but it also puts on hold whether there would actually be another game in the first place.
Aww, I have to agree. Just give me a scene of Sly & Carmelita's reunion and their future along with a glimpse of the rest of the gang's future and i'm all set. and I will probably go into a corner and cry happy tears for the next month or so... if it's a good ending of course... I HOPE
Don't worry, I'm a sucker for romance. I just won't tell anyone in real life that xD
Society gets this messed up idea of what we should be like. (I've had enough of it from the fashion industry itself). But society is always changing into something it's never been before, so how does anyone get the right to define how one should act within it? I understand the perspective of someone who looks down on franchises/fandoms which they have not associated with before, but I don't agree with how someone can have the right to hate or judge without understanding what it really is about or means. No one should ever feel like they have to 'grow out' of something they like, but develop it in the perspective that we are changing everyday as we learn about ourselves and the world we live in.Β
I think as society matures, things like social networking, fandoms (etc) will develop into something that is openly respected through all ages, not just children or teens. Gaming is pretty new to society and slowly people are becoming more familiar to it when compared to 10 or 20 years ago.
(My friend made me think about what I will be doing in 50 years. I think that whatever i'll be doing, these things I have enjoyed growing up with (games) will still be with me, just in a different way. I don't want to leave what I enjoy because I'm not in the target audience... I get enough of that already, haha)
I agree with your point about mature games. Social media nowadays means that games like Sly Cooper suffer which I guess forces the industry to further focus on gameplay value rather than story and visuals.
Yep. I have noticed a lot that the industry is focused on having it's own content rather than linking to an outside franchise. Business and regulations are very strict which can damage the potential for creativity.
The people I have met with have also had this 'thing' about costumery. I know that costumes are not fashion, but period fashion (such as from the Egyptian times or 1800's) are then perceived as costumes. I guess this idea links into cosplay as most franchises are based in a different time period.
I shouldn't go in too deep with this fashion business, I don't want to bore you xD
Yes! Same for me too. I want to dedicate more time to what I personally enjoy, such as games and fanart, but it's practically impossible throughout the year. From now until February i'm free but any time after that I easily desert Deviantart for months at a time. It's crazy, but I try to not make it damage my interests. Instead I work in a different way, such as listening to gaming related podcasts or doodling. To have society not break my interests makes me feel happy and stronger as an individual ^^
Ooh, sounds complex. I like the link to her being in a separate story rather than just linking to the direct plot (like the 'possible' Sly 5 plot). To do this is more difficult, but more effective and makes a lot of sense.
To not rush is the best thing when developing a story. I've rushed many in the past... I have discovered that it gets messy.... fast xD. You have some great elements already, think it though and i'm sure it will be great.

I really like the way you made neyla's back story. I've read plenty of fanfics about Neyla and don't get me wrong! ThereΒ were some that wereΒ good to amazing,Β butΒ most just give her such aΒ bad background story with the most horrible things happening to her, and she usually either ends upΒ a robot, dead, or both. Which is really sad because to me she's a bit of an "under rated" character despite how awesome she really is.Β
Amazing job on the story again! And I hope to read more about your version of Neyla!

Well thanks very much.
I guess like you I thought Neyla was pretty cool despite being evil. And I guess like so many I wanted to bring her back.
For me though; I wanted to not only bring her back but provide a back story to her as well as set her return as a clue to the bigger picture all the Sly characters will face. (Like she was part of a bigger scheme of things.)
I have heard how she ended up being a robot or dead. In some ways those can still work; but I guess it depends on how its written.
If people wanna keep her bad that's cool. Part of me does too; which is why she isn't Ms. Nice or 'I'm a good guy now' when she returns. Though she is somewhat of an ally; albeit an unwilling one. XD
Thanks a bunch. I plan on making it in comic form to explain her back story as well as eventually get to how she interacts with the other characters (particularly Carmelita) after the whole Clock-La incident.
Really appreciate the thoughtful comment. ^^

Traitor or not, she's still a cat. And I cannot ignore the need to pet felines. *pets*

Felines are just so much fun to pet. ^^
Though a tiger needs to be pretty doped up to pet it properly without fear of it lashing out. XD
