i think calling this well deserved is a major understatement... if this wasn't featured, then god was obviously smoking crack... for real.

The aesthetic beauty and brilliance of this piece is the first thing that hits me. It also goes along with some things I've been learning/pondering in the past little while about the state of modern physics. In our journey to understand the universe, we have been led down the path of quantum mechanics which puts a profound spin on the way things work. I won't bore you with the details, but it boils down to the fact that we don't live in an objective universe; the observer in a system plays a profound role in the way things play out in nature. This leads us to the conclusion that conciousness, whatever that may be, is a fundamental player in the workings of the universe. I've read many books and papers proposing theories about consciousness and will being the fundamental driving force in the universe, right down to the Big Bang. One of the books I've read recently even goes as far as to try and quantify consciousness processes as they are localized in the brain. This is where this piece and its "Origins" title seem profoundly apt. It's like nature and the whole universe find their origins deep in the tunnelling synapses of our mind and ourselves. This piece really brings those ideas to life. I love it!

Thanks for the extensive comment, having a degree in physics I do understand what you mean about observers having an effect. Although observers in QM aren't restricted to conscious beings.

mattwalker21 In reply to Shinybinary [2010-08-13 15:36:05 +0000 UTC]

That's true, I think one of the big debates in QM today is still defining what an observer actually is. A bunch of the books I've been reading recently like the idea of consciousness and the observer since it can play directly into some sort of idea of God. What they mean by consciousness isn't always well-defined either, sometimes not restricting it to sentient beings either. It's crazy stuff!

I had no idea you had a degree in physics as well. That's so cool! I don't technically have my degree yet. I still have a couple electives to take care of. Right now I'm doing research at a cyclotron in Vancouver.

Thanks! If you don't mind my asking, what kind of jobs did you go into after you got your physics degree? Or did you just go straight into a full-time career in art?
