When I was young my grandmother lived in Ca. and she used to send me abalone shells every year. The most phenomenal rainbow colors anyone could imagine.Β If cooked right they taste very nice too!

I've never tasted abalone myself. I hope to someday.
It's sad, but abalone was overfished in California in the past, so there are hardly any left. It's a good lesson to learn about moderation.

Yes I have heard from family out there that the abalone are really scarce now.
First time I went abalone hunting/fishing I was thinking fishing pole or something... nope, boots, crowbar and a basket/net bag 
As an 8 year old I didn't find it very fun
