It needs some time to get used to it. Somehow I've always used too much water and just noticed this year that I must take much less. My watercolour drawings always used to be very dull. 8'D

Ah, for me it was more like mixing the colors with too much water so it became too light. But I understand that problem, sometimes it's just too hard to wait and then you'll make a mess. Happened to me too. OTL

I think dA has becomeΒ pretty much of a fanservice community.Β Of course if you draw like Da Vinci himself it will give you a decent number of watchers without putting that much effort in it,Β but it isn't a must. You need some drawing skills, but they don't have to be outstanding, if you know what I mean.
If you want toΒ become "dA popular" it really depends on what you draw. If you draw fanart of a series with aΒ big fanbase it will be easier for you to get recognized. Just think of it: When do dA users see your art? The answer is easy, either it pops up in their inbox (aka they watch you already or they watch a group where you've put your art in) or they search it in the dA search bar. Now, those people will be most likely searching for a series or thing they already know or like. If you draw only ocs it will be harder, because it's very unlikely that someone looks for your oc's name or anything related with it.
The good thing is that there are many groups where you can put your art in. Not just of already existing published series, but also very wide topics. Like for example "traditional art". That's your chance to get people to see your art, although they don't watch you or don't know the subject you drew. Drawing fanart definitely helps a lot, but I for myself am not a big fan of it. I prefer drawing my own characters or characters with great designs from other people. And in the end I think the most important thing is to stay honest to yourself. You shouldn't draw stuff you aren't too fond off, just to become "popular", but instead focus on the things you really like. I guess in the end most artists on dA draw because it's what they like to do and not to get recognized. Second is a bonus, if you work really hard on your work. Don't take the attention, you get for you art, for granted. ovo)b
Besides groups it's also very important to be active here. Comment on other people's artworks and submit art on a regular basis. Don't be inactive for weeks (like me sometimes orz). You can also give llamas to strangers, so they see your name in your inbox. To be honest, I'm not really sure why they exist but that might be a reason.
I guess that's all, sorry if I forgot something. There are just two important things I want to get rid off at the end:
NEVER EVER bother anyone by begging for faves, watches, llamas and points or don't ask other people directly to become friends with them, without even knowing them really! At least to me, that comes across very intrusively. Just be yourself! ^-^
And the second thing: Draw for yourself. Improve for yourself. And never forget why you've started drawing. It's not all about attention but also having fun with your hobby. If people like the stuff you do, you'll get there by yourself. Don't push yourself too hard. I've seen this problem already with other people on dA. Some try too hard and lose fun in what they do... :/
