Description Small wip to show that I am still alive.
I am really enjoying my semi-hiatus so far. Yes, I am super stressed but it's oddly relaxed lying in the sun, reading your textbooks and just being offline. Seems like time runs much slower when you use it wisely so that helps me a lot. <:

Anyways, I am working on this piece for so long you can really see how much it changed. It isn't a drastic style change, though, it's more of a change in how refined it is and the consequence of removing the lineart. I wanted to give this the feeling of 1920s advertising paintings. The effort put in this exceeds the effort put into usual character references by far but it is kinda relaxing to just keep working on it bit by bit. It will probably be a long time until I completely finish this. His clothing is rather simple but I want to put a focus on the material and other minor details that don't catch the eyes at first sight. I think that's key to a realistic yet intriguing character design.
He might look a bit old for a 16 year old but when you look at old photographs the guys back then didn't look much younger. I think it's mainly due to the clothing and the hairstyle.

This is the whole "anthology":

These are the refined versions of the last sketches of September 2017 by the way. I kinda like his disgusted look on the sketch so I might bring this back. XD

Interesting, almost looks as if he is aging and becoming more severe in the progression from left to right. The added shadows and the thinning/coloring of the line art in the very last one looks very nice, and compared to the first image it is much more painterly looking and a little bit spooky looking to me. o:

Thank you very much Gil! Why is it spooky looking to you? Because of his stern expression?

Yeah I think it looks more stern, and the shine on his eyes gets less visible in each new version making it look more serious and creating a more gloomy look despite his facial expression not changing very much?

You're right about the shine. When I repainted the eyes and added it again it didn't look right to me but I think I just didn't try hard enough (or actually forgot in the end). I will probably add it again so he looks a bit livelier. o:
