Description
I'm currently working on getting Trolls ready for Castlefest, a 3-day fantasy festival in the Netherlands, August 1,2 and 3th. As it's getting closer, I'm sharing my works-in-progress to not be completely silent for a couple of months
I'm uploading a blog a week on shirleysstudio.blogspot.nl/ (every Monday!) to show pictures and updates
----
I thought I put my oven on 130 degrees Celsius but nope! I hit 160 degrees Celsius by accident and not noticed it until they finished baking! Woops!

Thank you so much! I see the trolls develop too, I love to try new details and shapes. Next stop is creating more realistic skin, hopefully that will go well!

True! I have used brown paint for creating shadows and burgundy for the cheeks etc. for ages, I'm still quit nervous to experiment with different colors, scared that I might mess up a doll But now that this happened, I think this color gradient looks pretty good on them! I'm going to try that effect on another doll soon, this time with paint instead of overbaking it, LOL!

That's actually an interesting effect you got from the over-baking. Maybe you can make a toasted marshmallow troll.

It's indeed quit a cool effect! Never expected that to happen, because it's one of the fist times I overbaked a piece. I'm mostly very careful with my oven settings, but I was in a hurry now. Not good, LOL!
And the marshmallow troll is hilarious! I might try that one day, I like the idea very much!

Sometimes accidents lead to new discoveries. I bet you could find a way to paint your trolls to get that toasty look on their ears and noses. I hope you'll try the marshmallow troll, I'm interested to see what you'd come up with.

Me too! I've had so many ideas going trough my mind that I stopped writing it down, the size of the list is .. ridiculous to say the least They are just so much fun to create, I hope I'll turn at least 90 years old in order to create everything that I have in my mind

Looks amazing! If I may ask, how did you develop that gradient to red on the ears? Is it a careful blending of clays or a sort of paint? Wonderful work

Thank you!
Well uhm, actually this is a baking accident, so the color gradient is "overbaked" polymer clay, heheh.. I actually really like how it turned out too, so I'm going to test if it's possible to create this effect with acrylic paint

Haha that's an incredibly convenient accident- it gives the face a lot of character. Look forward to seeing it completed!

It's true! I'll try this effect (with paint, not with overbaking again, LOL!) again on another doll I'm currently working on, let's see how that works out!

You could probably pull off the effect if you had an airbrush www.youtube.com/watch?v=TPQCwD… ;. From what I've seen they make lovely blends. Alas they also have a huge price tag and can take up a lot of space. Still, if you're looking into making really realistic looking skin tones for dolls or figures, it's something to consider.

Indeed, painting with a airbrush is easier to make details like different skin tones! I hope to get the hang of one soon to try it out on a doll, it makes me drool every time I see work created with a paintbrush! Those people have mad skills!!
I'll try it with a drybrush/rubbing technique for the time being, let's see how this works out!

I like everything about this humble face. The realistic ears, that hearthworming eyes, soft smile, bubbly cheeks and nose... You have a real talent bringing your works to life.
