I believe you're referring to cold-press paper... hot press tends to be very smooth, almost like plastic. The heaviness of the paper matters as well (pounds) the heavier the paper the more it absorbs your water. Another thing, using water colours means that you're going to have to do anywhere between 3-10 layers of paint to get your colour and contrast right. Lastly, never completely wet your paper unless you're stretching it or doing a wash. I would recommend taking watercolour classes to learn more about the medium and techniques. Plain old practice and experimentation works too. Good luck!

It definitely said "hot press" on the sticker that was attached. :I All other watercolor stuff I've done has been on cold press, which is why I was curious to try it out, but so far it's just been such a hassle. The prof figured wetting it while taped down might saturate it enough to not gobble all the water but even taped on all sides it got wrinkly. I'll have to look into the weight though, I only had a few options so I didn't really look into it.

That's unfortunately characteristic of hot-press. It has no surface area compared to super-bumply cold press, so the water just evaporates right up. You're professor's right though, the best bet is to tape your paper down. Another good trick is to tape it on top of some paper towels. The paper underneath will absorb the water and help keep everything damp for longer working periods, although it does tend to increase the amount of wait-time between coats.

And don't worry about the wrinkles. Hot press paper buckles laterally in one direction no matter what you do, the key is again to keep it taped down until it's totally dry. Heavier paper sort..of.. helps with hot press. I wouldn't go light like 90LB, but i've had heavier paper buckle, then get stiff and stuck. 140LB takes heavy washes, and it's light enough to iron out if things get too gnarly. (it's also not as phenomenally expensive ;=

I guess the only other thing I can say about hot-press paper is it's all about letting it do the work. It flat out won't hold the paint steady like cold press, even as you let the layers dry. On the other hand, cold press paper doesn't dry with the same kinds of anomalies. I use huge brushes when I work and just kind of spill and correct as I go.. then, when I want finer details, I use other mediums. The papers smooth, so you can pretty much use anything without a whole lot of compromise.

And just so you know, I HATED hot press the first time I tried it because the stuff is so freaking unreasonable!!

Yeah, another classmate got it, too, and the prof actually offered to give us some cold press we were so frustrated with it. She accepted, but I figured I'd paid for the damn paper so I sure as hell wasn't gonna let it beat me! Plus using it more probably helps figure it out.
I think I favored cold press because to me the bumplies read as a real, traditional watercolor signature. Like looking at people's stuff I can tell if it's watercolor just by seeing the bumps. Of course nowadays you can probably fake it in digital but if you do it's probably because you want it to look watercolory.
After having done like 6-7 pages for a book on cold press though I'm starting to worry the bumps are messing with my image, so it's probably for the best I get some experience with both, no matter how hard. =/

While not being my favourite piece from all those works you've published here, I still consider this a marvellous one, and a good one at representing the way your artwork has gone and how much you have accomplished. I surely hope whoever evaluates the Thesis has the insight to notice it all (well she/he/they should, being in that position
Good luck and congratulations

All of your attention to detail and mood, as well as your tendency to make every nook and cranny of your compositions with something interesting, works really well with this type of children's illustration.
