if your renders are taking 3 hours in apophysis, id say your going overboard...
remember, your working within a dpi resolution, you can only juice so much from it...
but still, its worth it here...

i manage to get a render of perfect quality in about 40 mins, which doesnt require any post process work, besides the nnecessary that i do for aesthetic reasons...
i normally have a filter of 0.4, oversample 2, sample density 800-1400...
it works fine, perfect image at 1280x1024, render from abour 6 minutes to an hour depending on the level of zoom.
i dont know, maybe what youve got pays off at high resolutions, but all the extra time seems like overkill to me...
