Description Progress update for this ship, recently renamed to Humming Bird.

First WIP is here: [link]

Conceptually, this is a very fast, very light scout ship. It is lightly (if at all) armed, and is primarily designed to get in and get out fast, using its extreme maneuverability to evade attackers. It is equipped with mission specific reconnaissance equipment, allowing it to specialize rather than generalize like AWACS, UAVs, and satellites.

Its experimental combination RAM/SCRAM Jet engines allow it to reach and maintain speeds in excess of 4500 MPH at high altitude. At operational heights, its speed is still very respectable at 1400 MPH.

Its most unique feature, and the feature for which it was named, is the highly advanced QSML (Quantum Superconducting Magnetic Levitation) System. This is installed on the underside of the ship, and when activated, produces a low humming sound and allows the ship to hover and flit around like its namesake.

While not capable of complete stealth, in the hands of a skilled pilot, this ship is nigh impossible to catch and its high speed assures that by the time you detect it, it's already there. Training for this craft is extremely difficult and intensive, and only those pilots with very high reflexes are able to pilot it. Since its program began 5 years ago in 2085, only a dozen men and women have ever completed training successfully. The mortality rate in the training program is 40%.

lol, well cheers anyways mate looks like we're pretty much on the same playing field i tend to sort of bypass reference material once i have the basic shape laid down ^^

i'm loving the design! i'm thinking of modelling an aircraft, any pointers you might be able to share?

Well, this is the first and only aircraft I've done, and I had no real direction or sketches. I just kinda booted up Max and started going at it.

Definitely have sketches or reference pictures so you know exactly what you want to make and all the details you need. But based on the Skyline you did I think you've got this one down pat

So I guess one thing that definitely helped was getting the basic shape of the whole craft down, then refining the details, as opposed to trying to make it perfectly inch by inch.

I dunno, I'm not too great with technique so me giving you advice is kinda like bobo the clown giving Michael Phelps pointers on swimming

I'm sure it'll come out great.

Thanks, it'll be even more badass if I ever finish it and throw it in a nice render. :

Yeah, that's pretty damn impressive right there. If you're looking for a good color palette, I'd shy away from green on this one. Grays, silvers, reds, whites dotted with maybe blacks, reds, whites and yellows in the decals might do her justice. I'm picturing X-wing Fighter type stuff mixed in with Firefly ware on this thing (and now that I see it, apparently Maryland flag colors). It'd fit in either universe well, but more so the Firefly-verese.

I'd say lacquer on bright whites and then experiment from there.

What program did you use to put the beaut together?

3d Studio Max.

Right now I'm experimenting with some grays and blues using camouflage patterns. I think I want to avoid bright colors as they tend to wash out the details.
