Atem, Yami, Yugi - and the furball in between. The Yu-Gi-Oh! canon has never properly explained the relationship among the three. Yugi was vague referred to as "the lighter half of the soul", "the Chosen One" etc. This led to much speculation on *what* Yugi really is in regards to Yami.
Some say that he's the reincarnation of Atem. Some apply the Egyptian ka-ba theory and conclude that Yugi is the ka part of the soul. Some simply say that Yugi is half of the soul. Which theory is right, we may never know.
As far as we're concerned, it might only be a big fat plothole. *smirk*

Well, there's kind of a problem with the Ka-ba theory. The Ka from what I understand is actually the life force of the body. It resides on the heart (ib) which is the also the location of ones memories. The Ka is referred to as the double and death occurs when the Ka leaves the body. The ba can leave and come back on a regular basis without death occurring. However, the ba only leaves when the body is sleeping or unconscious. The out of body sensation is the ba taking a little journey. Both the Body (Khat) and the Ka are formed at the same time on Khnum's potter's wheel. We all know how different Yugi's personality is in comparison to Yami's. Also of interest, between Yugi and Yami, they have two shadows or Khaibit. In the egyptian belief system, when a person dies I would say that five parts of the soul actually make the journey through the Duat to reach the judgment halls also known as the halls of ma'at. The ren or name, the ib(which he has to carefully guard against the creatures of the other world who want to steal it), the khaibit, which appears to be inseparable from the ba, and lastly there is the sekhem or power...Honestly I'm still trying to figure out what this power may have been.
Sorry for going all nerdy on you. I've just been doing a lot of research on the topic for a fan-fic I'm working on. Heck, I'm actually working my way through a translation of the Egyptian book of the dead. If you want a long hard read...I would definitely recommend this book.
Getting the point that your really interested in, I love your picture. It's absolutely adorable! The threesome just creates that much more interest in the overall scheme of the work. It's absolutely amazing.

Wow, what an essay you have there. I did some research on the Ka and the Ba when I was writing my fanfics, but I got stuck at the part about the soul having five parts or something and ended up making stuff up/ misinterpreting the whole thing. You seem to have done a very thorough research on the issue though. Is the translation of the book of the dead difficult?
That aside, thanks for the compliment!

Not really difficult so much as a bit dry. It is a lot to read through. part 1 of the book is basically just prayers and praises. The deceased does a lot of praising of the different gods before making his requests. The particular translation I'm working through is actually an original translation put out by Penguin Classics. According to the really long introduction it was translated by Ernest Alfred Thompson Wallis Budge who actually gave the gods names. According to Penguin, the more recent translations don’t give the god’s names…so you really wouldn’t know whom the prayers are addressed. Within these prayers there are hints of dangers that the deceased must face…in one prayer, rather than just having just the duat to pass through, there is hinted at a nether world which must be crossed first. This is in the Hymn to the setting Sun in the papyris of Mut-hetep. Something else you might find very interesting, cause it startled me when I came across it, the name of Ra (the sun god) when he is setting, is Tem, At’mu, Atem, and I think a couple of other spellings. I sure didn’t find this online anywhere though. I’m actually using several books for references and study. If you’re interested, I could give you a list.
So, what fanfics were you writing? Are they on Fanfic.net?

I think I read somewhere as well that Ra refers mostly to the sun in the morning or earlier hours of the day, and Atem is, as you say, the names when he sets. It can also be spelt Atum if I remember correctly.
But it seems that Ra and Atem start off as different deities altogether, before they are merged into one.
And uh, to answer your question, I was writing a few yugioh fics under the name of Hitokiri-san in ff netand simply needed the background info. Haha

I don't get why you think "Yami" is any differient then Atem. They ARE the SAME PERSON. So really there is no difference at all. So why make three of them? When there really only two.
