By the 2040s, climate change began to impact strategic doctrines for the nations of Gaia. As secure farmland, bases and manufacturing facilities, began to be battered by frequent
disaster events, governments began to seek multiple strategies to compensate. Amongst one of the strategies was to develop mobile infrastructure like sea fairing, floating megacities. Landmass powers chose a different path: the construction of giant vacuum airships, often reaching up to 10 kilometers long.

Formerly a theoretical development, these airships use a near vacuum internal environment, as opposed to lighter than air gas, for buoyancy. However, maintaining that buoyancy requires a rigid strong internal structure to resist the pressure of the vacuum collapsing in upon itself. This wouldn't have been possible without the development of advanced meta-materials, similar to the ones developed for use in Gaia's multiple, greenhouse gas scrubbing megastructures.

Depending on their purpose, the vacuum airships could be anything from warships, flying airports, industrial plants to giant greenhouses. Despite the expense, the worsening environmental situation caused nations to expend their treasuries to build and protect these strategic assets.

I don't know... a bit of handwaivium in the fiction, but "rule of cool" comes first. This is kind of an homage to all the Ace Combat/Project Wingman series boss battles.
