Background Story:

Liang’s father is a simple man from You province who excelled in martial arts and weaponry while her mother is a scholar and a member of the royal family who hails from Goguryeo. Trained by her father and strictly taught by her mother, Liangchen grew up in top form physically and mentally. She spent most of her early life in Goguryeo until her father was summoned by the Han Imperial Court to specially craft weapons for its high-ranking generals and stayed in Puyang. She is the second eldest of four siblings. Her older brother is Liang Hao who fought against the Yellow Turbans and was recruited by Cao Cao, her younger brother is Liang Guo who succeeded their father, and her younger sister is Liang Xinjie (Lady Liang of Wei) who served Wei as a lady-in-waiting.

Service under Lu Bu and subsequent departure:

She originally served Lu Bu as the bodyguard of his daughter, Lu Lingqi. She cared for her thoroughly, providing her with guidance, company and taught her many things. Under his service, she also learned music and was taught the ways of the court. Liu Bei tried to talk her over during the siege of Xu Province but failed.

During the downfall of Xiapi, she was still able to escape with Lingqi after Lu Bu interfered with Xiahou Yuan’s arrows. As Lingqi mounted her black horse, Liangchen was caught by Cao Cao’s soldiers who were not aware of his orders. She was able to fight back just enough for Lingqi to flee to safety. Despite taking mortal blows from three arrows to the shoulder and back, she was satisfied to be able to see Lingqi’s escape. Liu Bei heard the commotion and instructed the guards to bring her to Cao Cao, his commanding officer at the time. Lu Bu thanked her for everything before his execution.

Realizing how fatal her injuries were, Cao Cao decided to let her heal before sending her home, and Liu Bei kept her company during her recovery. Inspired by the man’s kindness and gentleness, Liangchen decided to think deep about what she wanted to do with her life after Lu Bu’s death.
Back in her home, her mother revealed that her father had expressed desire to return to Goguryeo to stay away from the growing tensions of the land after noticing the rise of conflict between Cao Cao and the Yuans. She decided to stay put with them to sort herself out.

Service under Liu Bei:

After Liu Bei established himself in Jing Province three years later, he sent Liao Hua as an envoy to invite her to serve under him. Remembering the kindness he showed her in Xiapi, Liangchen made up her mind and decided to accept his invitation. She rendezvoused with Zhao Yun, Liu Bei’s general formerly under Gongsun Zan, whom she was previously acquainted to. The two traveled to Xianye in Jing dressed as peasants.

Equipped with her mystical baton and a determination that stems from Liu Bei's trust, she swore loyalty to him as a bodyguard and humble servant. Alongside her who made this promise was Zhao Yun, who became her husband. They lived a peaceful life in Jing Province for several years. In addition to serving Liu Bei, she also served and took good care of Liu Shan, fondly calling him “young master”.

Years later she joins Zhao Yun to escort Liu Bei in his marriage to Sun Shangxiang and befriends the Wu princess as one of her maids. She remained loyal to Shu even after Liu Bei’s death.

She last appears during the Battle of Wuzhang Plains, assisting her husband in driving off the Wei forces.

Her children are Zhao Tong (style name: Zicheng), Zhao Ziyang and Zhao Guang (style name: Jingtao).
Her other known descendants are Zhao Chunyang, born to Zhao Tong and Ma Chao's youngest daughter, wife to Wen Yang; and Guan Tong (style name: Changyu), born to Zhao Ziyang and Guan Xing, heir to his noble blood and position in the army.

Personality:

Liangchen’s character is a straightforward, service-oriented and is the person who takes care of everyone. She is often reserved, observing everything with understanding and projects an air of maturity and quiet strength. She is very polite to everyone she talks to and regards them respectfully, regardless of class. Usually calm, cool and collected, she initially rejects violence and conflict, and would often try to settle things by talking people down. She thinks before she feels, and is a logical kind of person rather than emotionally-driven.

Among her colleagues, especially the younger ones, she is often the voice of reason and one who is always ready to provide motherly comfort and advice. At the same time, she will not hesitate to chastise them with brutal honesty for their wrongdoings. Despite the pre-existing coldness, she is a genuinely loving and caring person and helped raise many of the kingdom's future warriors. Her maternal aura makes her approachable to the warriors of Shu.

She is also a heavy drinker when she wants to. She can hold her alcohol pretty well and can keep up with the boys over wine. Whenever Lu Bu drank, he usually invites her and Zhang Liao to be his drinking buddies. She can also keep up with Zhang Fei’s alcoholic talent to some degree only to pass out later. Whenever she has one too many to drink, she gets extremely talkative. She is fond of music, and could play the Guzheng better than she could dance. At celebrations, she is frequently asked to play said instrument for the guests. At times, she is asked to be one of the dancers despite her reluctance.

Relationship with her husband:

After entering Liu Bei's service, she eventually becomes close to Zhao Yun and becomes his most trusted friend and confidant. She finds joy in selflessly serving under him after he showed her kindness and compassion; worrying about him and constantly reminding him not to overwork himself. She is a very affectionate wife and provides him with utmost care and moral support. She is particularly strict with his eating habits especially since he gets so engrossed in work. Zhao Yun, in turn, is very protective of her and regards her with a lot of affection and high respect. They are a very private couple, and it was a mutual agreement to keep their marital status a secret. Only a few people knew they are husband and wife, and even fewer who knew what they were like aside from warrior and maid.

During his lone rampage to rescue Adou in Changban, she volunteered to go with him but he pleaded that she stay and look after their children. Worried sick about his safety, she gave him her sword and prayed for his safe return. When he came back unhurt, she wept tears of joy which Zhao Yun noted to be the first time he ever saw her cry.

Like her husband, she does not always agree with Liu Bei's decisions. She trusts his virtue, but will not hesitate to voice out her concerns once his line of thinking and what he preaches do not align, even if he shoots her down at times. She puts her faith in Zhao Yun's judgement and lets him decide what's best for him whenever his and his lord's beliefs come in conflict.

Her husband calls her "Yan", on a one-syllable name basis as an indication of their closeness, while she addresses him as "Lord Zilong" or simply "Zilong" respectfully. Other people who share a particular closeness with her such as Lu Bu, Liu Bei, and Sun Shangxiang address her by her real name.

Design/Character Symbolism:

Liangchen is often associated with the colors light fuschia and violet, as well as waterliles and lotuses in full-bloom. The colors reflect a significant part of her personality and history. The waterlily and lotus symbolize her purity of mind and heart above mud and water, which could represent her employers Lu Bu and Liu Bei respectively, where she would stick to her own ideals despite their influence and her own obedience towards them. Additionally, it can also reflect her maturity as a character and daintiness as a lady. She is also sometimes associated with the swallow from the literal translation of her name, but rarely.

The name of her 6th weapon, Heavenly Xian, was taken from the Taoist deities that lived in the Kunlun mountains and are occassionally portrayed accompanied a dragon. It is an allusion to her ties with her husband who is known as the young dragon.

I've decided to make her "playable debut" at Dynasty Warriors 8, and her story with Lu Bu is in Xtreme Legends since that's when Lu Lingqi was introduced, even though I've designed DLC outfits for her that existed before that XD As for her voice actresses that I've picked... Emi Shinohara is best known as Sailor Jupiter from Sailor Moon and Uzumaki Kushina from Naruto while Jennie Kwan is Suki from Avatar: The Last Airbender.

Zhao Tong and Zhao Guang are Zhao Yun's real historical sons. While their mother is not named, I'm assuming it's because he was unmarried or she was not recorded, and they could have been half brothers or simply adopted. Guan Tong is also Guan Xing's historical son. I just gave them the style names.

After months of trying to figure this out, I'm glad I can finally share Liangchen's story on here! I've been wanting to do this since last May but wasn't able to complete it due to the constant changes I was making, but now I finally feel satisfied. Her silhouette was the most difficult to come up with since it's my first time taking that into consideration... Anywho, I hope you enjoy knowing about her as I've enjoyed developing her! I hope I won't have the urge to update this every now and then hahaha~

I'd love to go in-depth about her weapon, since I'm very proud of the fact that I conjured that once on a 3AM lol. It's a shadow sprint type of weapon and it's classified under special types. I'd put it under the club type since she uses it to hit opponents but she also throws it around like a boomerang and her EX attacks involve summoned daggers... but anyway, some other time on that.
