Description

From the ceremony in the cathedral to the hall their reception is held in, everything about their wedding feels three sizes too grand. Summer stands with her back to the wall, nervously nibbling on a much too dry piece of cake while her new mother-in-law parades her wealthy friends past her. She feels plain and out of place - suddenly she regrets being so insistent on sewing her own dress.
Finally her husband (strange to say that, now!) appears in the doorway and rushes to her side. I'm sorry for leaving you with her, he says. Are you alright, my mouse? You look pale.
Summer grabs his arm. Let's get out of here, she whispers.

Even though they're supposed to be the day's main feature, they're left unattended quite often, and use one of those moments to sneak off and hop into the carriage that's waiting on the side of the road. The driver is confused. Already? Where to?
Anywhere but here, they giggle. Summer pulls her veil out of her hair, not caring that she's ruining her intricate up-do.
The busy evening street leads them to the lights and music of the spectacle on Coney Island...

Unlike immigrant kid Summer, Kent's family enjoys a much higher societal standing. When his mom gets wind of his plans to marry, she immediately takes over and sets up a whole EVENT. A big cathedral in Manhattan (where they live) and a bombastic reception are barely ENOUGH. But the newlyweds are country folk at heart. They go along with it because they have to (for peace's sake), put on brave smiles and shake everyone's hand - but as soon as they're left out of sight, they ditch the party and wander off to Coney Island, where they spend the rest of their special day at the amusement park.

(And later give his mom a second heart attack when they tell her they've bought land in faraway Texas?!)

Sometimes, inspiration just HITS yknow?! In this case I was standing in a puddle of rain in the middle of Ludwigsburg's Christmas Market, musing about how the carousel was only for children and how unfair that was - while WesternSpice and OliviaH-Illustration were plotting Kent's and Summer's wedding. The mini elopement came up. I looked at the carousel and knew what I had to do.
