Description
Becuase I'm a detail hoe, I decided to do a more-or-less full reference for my Gen 1 Eridanus for . Her bio is also on this as well, so as not to clutter up the actual task!Mood Music: youtu.be/IWy446fVwDI (also her theme song!)
Name: Arethusa (Nimble Water – Ancient Greek)
Age: 19 at the start of the war, 22 at the end; barely 23 at the time of death.
Sexuality: Demisexual; romantically attracted to women. Homosexuality on Eridu is looked on with respect; they believe that those who are attracted to the same gender have their souls split with who becomes their lover, becoming one when they join together.
Hair: Pure white and insanely long. Due to the customs of her planet, unmarried women do not cut their hair from the moment they are born. She's a bit of a...special circumstance and is allowed to cut her bangs. Her hair is long, thick and border-line curly, worn in a tight braid that is coiled around (and sewn) into her head multiple times. A bodkin holds it in place in the back. The last braided bit hangs down over her right shoulder, and her bangs are down to her collar-bone, parted dramatically on her right side and almost entirely obscuring the left side of her face from view. If her braid was let down, it would drag along the ground by several yards.
Eyes: Bright yellow, though her pupils are wider then a normal human's are, due to how dark it is on her homeworld.
Skin: Extremely pale, considered an albino in Earth terms.
Height: 5'11”
Note: As Eridanus's powers are passed down via rebirth and not through inheritance, her face and body type are roughly the same, though height and eye color do change. Her skin and hair are always considered albino. It should be noted that Arethusa is much stronger built, primarily in the shoulders/upper arms and thighs, due to her swimming background on her homeworld.
Abilities: Strong swimmer (despite her delicate apperances), able to see in dark areas that humans cant (and survive in colder weather with little clothing!), able to see the darker side of others, is very clever.
Job: One of the intelligence officers, as she is very quiet, observant and clever.
Likes: The dark/quiet, being under water, frogs or other amphibians/reptiles, the cold, stroms, riddles and poetry.
Dislikes: Sunlight or other bright lights, heat, is downright terrified of dogs, sudden nosies or bangs, being disturbed, overly curious people.
Hobbies: Swimming, skulking around in the shadows, confounding people with riddles, collecting frog figurines, weaving.
Personality: "Where the hell did YOU come from?!"
Arethusa is quiet, skulking. One minute she's not there, the next she is. Her life has always been surronded by darkness and piercing cold, and a lot of this is reflected in her personality. "Creepy" tends to be the best word to describe her; she tends to always be there, but rarely says anything. She'd rather silently observe someone from the shadows, occasionally popping in with an insightful comment or two, then melt away. She doesn't smile, doesn't jest, and prefers to be left alone. It's only when she's in the Cloaked World and forced to interact with someone that she's there, watching. Knowing too much from all of the times she silently listens in to people, but never voicing her thoughts or opinions.
When she does talk, however, Arethusa doesn't make it easy on people who listen. She has a very annoying tendancy to skirt around any issues at hand, and usually doesn't answer anyone directly. In a sense, her speech is very flowery and almost poetic in the manor in which she speaks, but she never explains herself. Given her love of riddles and being rather clever herself, she prefers to let people figure out her intent themselves. It's incredibly hard ot read Arethusa, given how she tends to speak in a monotonous lull and her face isn't very expressive. She comes off as being cold and withdrawn in this case, which is mostly true, but she does have feelings. Somewhere.
Given that she isn't used to a world without abundant light and heat, Arethusa keeps to herself as much as possible. She reacts poorly to the change of climate, and as time goes along it becomes more and more obvious that she isn't adapting. While the war rages on, she degrates from her cold, lone-wolf figure into a virtual recluse. Arethusa doesn't want others to worry for her, however, and keeps this hidden as best as she can. Worry causes curiosity and she hates being disturbed. She does take her work very seriously, however; but still prefers she remain on her own.
History: Born into the world of Eridu, Arethusa's life was fairly simple. She lived in a very small village, so small they didn't really even have a regular member on the Council. It was discovered from a very early age that she could hold her breath extremely long under water, and was trained from a young age to become a bog fisher. Her job was to dive down into the water below her village to hunt for the rich bottom-feeders, using specially designed hand-held hooks. It was a simple life, not one she ever really complained about. But it felt like it was missing...something.
At the age of 18, Arethusa was lucky enough to be chosen as a sacrifice to the Gods. Her family was thrilled; they were a poor fishing family and never expected their child to be chosen for such an honor. Even Arethusa was thrilled, glad to finally have some semblance of purpose in this quiet life. She was prepared to shed her earthly body and become a God, and after a ritualistic ceremony, weights were tied to her ankles and she was thrown into the water graveyard.
Arethusa didn't know how long she was down there. She could hold her breath a very long time, and even when she was allowing her lungs to fill with water, she never blacked out or perished. Eventually, one of the gravekeepers found her and was shocked to find that she was still alive, cutting the rope from her ankles and bringing her up to the surface.
She had been down there two weeks.
The people didn't know what to believe. No one could hold their breath that long! Arethusa had done more then shed her mortal body and ascend, she had returned to them a living Goddess in their presence. All of the sudden, she was elevated from a simple fisher to a literal, living diety, and was torn from her quiet home and brought to the capital of Eridu. She became the most important person on the entire planet, everyone turning to her for her thoughts and opinions. It drove Arethusa nuts; she couldn't stand the attention, and just wanted to be left alone to swim or weave. There were many times Arethusa slipped away into the shadows and would hide in a pond or bog, but she was always found or forced to return. It wasn't a life she wanted, it wasn't the purpose she was meant to have, either. She prayed to the Gods that she would be released from this torment.
At the age of 19, she got her wish.
Year 1: Upon being summoned for the first time, Eridanus had a lot of trouble adapting. Given that she came from a very cold, dark world, the warmth and light of the Cloaked World didn't suit her. Thankfully, a few changes were made and her rooms were designed to reflect her homeworld. Likewise, the natural bacteria she needed in order to survive was placed in her drinks, allowing her to remain mostly alright. Still, Arethusa prefered to go out at night, and usually didn't interact with the other Constellations during this first year. Except when stepping out of the darkness, giving a riddle or a prose, then disappearing. Although she takes her work as a Constellation seriously, Eridanus prefered to keep to herself. After the last year of being the center of attention, she was ready for a change.
Slowly, she began to adapt to working with a team, focusing on her abilities and training. While Arethusa still prefers solitude while on the Cloaked World, she becomes much more used to working with others in combat as the first year rolls along.
Year 2: Adapting to the climate change starts to have an effect on Eridanus, becoming more secluded from others in her off-time. However, she still focuses on her job and missions, doing all she can to help stem the tide against the alien forces attacking. Her strength is increased during this time, and she becomes more adapt at using her scarf in battle. She is mildly concerned about the disapperance of Cepheus, mostly because it seemed odd that he would defect. Though, she eventually shoves this out of her mind, assuming he was merely killed in action. At least his soul may ascend.
Year 3: By the end of the war, Arethusa became more lethargic. She was glad the war was over, and part of her wanted to return home; but the thought of living amongst people who would worship her as a living Goddess bothered her. So, she accepted the Lady's terms of going to Earth, even though she knew it would eventually kill her. After all, without the bacteria in the water she had evolved to required to process liquids, it wouldn't take long.
On Earth: Settling in a colder, forested part of what would eventually become Canada, Arethusa was content to live her life in quiet isolation. A few of the Constellations that got used to her quiet, creepy personality would visit her from time-to-time, and each time anyone saw her, she was weaker and thinner. While the cold climate agreed with her, and she slept during the day, the lack of bacteria was what was doing her in. When she was on her last legs, she was welcoming of death. Now, she truly could become a God, her soul ascending to a higher plane of existance.
Sure enough, not long after turning 23, Arethusa sucumbed to the illness. Per her request, she was buried at sea, not far from where she had been living; however, in a most curious turn of events, her body sank of it's own accord. It was through this that her soul was allowed to pass, lingering within the vast ocean of Earth. Eridanus' soul remained within the oceans until her next reincarnation, who was conceived on a boat at sea. Thusly, the River would continue to live on. And, perhaps, she would be happier this time. Relationships: Lady of the Stars: Eridanus respects the Lady for giving her a better purpose then she had on her homeworld. That, and she understands that the River needs some time to be alone, and that gives her some extra brownie points. She likes the Lady, even if she shows it in her own weird, quirky way.
Dorado: Eridanus isn't quite sure where she stands with Dorado. On one hand, she respects Dorado as their leader, as well as working with her to get her teammates who can stand her creepy, indirect personality and missions that suit her needs. But, on the other, she can tell that same personality irritates Dorado at times, especially the indirect and cryptic part. Eridanus does what she can to not talk around Dorado and cheese her off, quietly accepting orders and nodding her head.
Warrior Lupus: While Eridanus may not have anything personal against the guy, she's terrified of him. The fact that there are no land predetors at ALL on her homeworld, wild dogs and wolves scare the piss out of her. As a person, she has no problems with him, but she still avoids him because...well, he can turn into a giant wolf. And she doesn't like that, even if he wouldn't change in front of her due to this fear.
Lynx: Lynx is...too curious for Eridanus' taste. One thing that irritates her more then anything is being disturbed. After that, it's people poking around in her buisness. Which, sadly, doesn't bode well for the little kitten. Eridanus hasn't taken the time to actually get to know her, honestly.
Serpens: While he's not a frog, Eridanus still likes reptiles and snakes, and isn't squeaked out by the fact that Serpens is basically a man-snake. Both of them have an appreciaition for riddles and the darker side of life, and respect each other's need for solitude. Serpens facinates Eridanus, though they do have difficulty meeting on common ground, given how he gets lethargic in the dark and cold, and she can't be in the warmth and light for too long, either. They find their ways, though.
(More to come as I figure things out )
Homeworld: Eridu
Eridu is located in the system of Cursa/Eridani Beta, which is the first/top-most start of the Eridanus Constellation. Eridani Beta is a white star, however Eridu is one of the last planets in the system, and surprisingly, one of the few that actually supports life. Due to this, the life on the planet has adapted to the lack of light and warmth, and there is a ring around the center of the planet with a temperate climate life flourishes.
It is within this band that Arethusa was born. It's filled with a dense, thick forest that grows directly out of swamp and marsh-lands; nearly the entire temperate ring is like this. The forest is so thick that even sunlight doesn't penetrate it, the trees soaking up all of the precious rays of daylight. However, life found a way down below, the rest of the vegetation and creatures living there growing to adapt to the lack of light. Moss, fungus and other such things have their own biolumiesence, painting this marshland with eerie green-and-blue light. It's with this light that the animals below and the people see by.
As it is very distant from the sun, and what little sunlight that comes down is absorbed by the canopy, Eridu is very, very cold. However, the trees block any ice or snow that form, and the waters have a special bacteria in it that prevents freezing. The people (and animals and foliage!) have gotten used to this cold enviroment, as well as the unique bacteria in the water they drink. It forms a symbiotic relationship, in a sense.
Since the world is nothing but marshes and swamps, as well as lakes and ponds intermingled, there isn't any solid ground to build on nor any land preditors. So, the people of Eridu build elaborate tree houses in the tall canopies, with rope ladders leading down to the water and bridges spanning to and fro. Their cities are huge and elaborate, and these bridges serve as their roads. Their primary source of food are the water creatures that live down below, and one of the main occupations of the people are fishers. They also consume the vegetation that grows in the water, similar to seaweed or kelp.
The culture of Eridu's people are also rather...unique. They wear little clothing at all, despite the freezing tempatures of their planet, often only wearing skirts and nothing on top (yes, even the men wear skirts!). They hitch them up when they work or fish, and only officals wear elaborate sashes over their torsos, signifying their rank. They also have a very strong, democratic political system; while the villages and cities are far-spread, they have a unified Council in which the people elect members for. Each village has one Council member that is elected, though larger towns and cities may have more. They conveen on a regular basis to vote upon common laws, though each village may have different regulations here and there.
As far as religion, the people of Eridu take it very seriously. They perform elaborate water burials, as there is no ground in which to bury their dead and no where safe to burn the bodies, either. They tie weights to the dead's ankles, and throw them into specific areas of the marsh, swamp or lake each village resides upon. These become "water graveyards," and special chains are made to surrond these yards so fish and other predetors don't get in, nor can any stray bodies get out. These bodies are remarkably well preserved, even hundreds of years later, due to the severe cold of the waters and the bacteria within them. In some areas, they even become like "bog bodies," depending on where they end up. These graveyards are tended to by specific grave keepers who ensure the bodies are kept in line, and to fetch any that become untethered from their weights.
More over, the dead are sacred to the people. It is strongly believed that death is not an end, nor is it something to be mourned. In fact, they celebrate death in a very macabre way. For when you die, your earthly body is shed and you ascend to the heaven's as a God. Therefore, dying isn't some horrible thing to fear and loathe, but something to look forward to. However, taking one's own life is still rather taboo, as the Gods must choose you for death, you do not get to choose when you die. Thusly, only people who die of natural causes or accidents are accepted, though ritualistic sacrifice is very common and a greatest honor to be selected for these rituals. Many raise their children just so they will be favored by the Gods and selected for a sacrifice, and those of the family left behind are risen up in rank and favor.
Eridanus is always female, and always attracted to other women. She also usually recovers at least SOME of her memories as she ages; though thankfully, she is always reborn human and doesn't require cold climates/bacteria in order to survive on Earth. She is always albino, though the eye color does change btween generations. However, Eridanus' always does prefer colder, darker weather because of her original life, which has left the biggest impression on her compared to the others.
And this is also why Aeron doesn't like dogs! Given how Arethusa was terrified of them, it's always bled over in every generation. It's less pronounced in Aeron, but still present.
Here's the full reference for my Gen1 Eridanus, Arethusa! I really, really love her design; probably more then Aeron's

I love her design and especially her colors. Poor Aeron, I agree I like this one better (but I am also guilty of this with favoring Jia over Moni, design wise).
I'm sorry Jia's so business-like much of the time, it's not Arethusa's fault ;_; *puts frogs on her head*

Haha, poor Aeron is doomed to have a lesser outfit design
It's cool! Arethusa is difficult to get along with 90% of the time with probably 95% of everyone!

Arethusa has something in common with Camilla, as Camilla was also revered as a deity on her homeworld. However, I think Camilla has weathered it better, and it came with a certain amount of (admittedly unwelcome) celebrity. Being more reserved and calm compared to Iolana, I think Arethusa might get along with Camilla better if you decide to work with it.

Ahh, I love her so much. Her world is so well-developed and you seem to have thought everything out, even down to details about microbes that she needs to live that may not be present on other worlds. As for her design, the blue-green fabrics that drape so heavily on her capture the idea of water pulling her down and her pale complexion makes her look fittingly ghostly.
While Kallimachos is far more social than Arethusa would probably be comfortable with, he would probably feel a kinship with her because they both come from strongly religious cultures.

World building is one of the things I LOVE doing, I'm really glad that it came through with the description of Eridu I wasn't actually thinking about the heavy fabrics...it was a spontaneous thing. Glad it came out that way, though? XD
Overly friendly people arent really her thing, but as long as he respects her need for space, she'll be fine with him

Overly friendly isn't quite his style, he's much more patient than actively outgoing, if that makes sense. (He was trained for diplomatic work on his own planet, so he tries to pick up cues quickly.) One of his beliefs is that love fuels his powers, so he takes pains to be kindly towards his fellow soldiers in a way that works for them. So if Arethusa needs space, he would learn that and adjust his behavior accordingly. (Occasional notes with riddles to let her know she is being thought of, for instance.) Though that still might be too much for her, heh.

Ah, I see! Yeah, as long as he gives her space and allows her to come to him on her own time, Arethusa would be fine. She just doesn't like people poking into her business when she doesn't want them too, lulz. But it'll be a bit difficult, considering how enclosed she is in-general as a person. Offerings of frog figurines might help, though
