Description Whoah, this took me a teeny tiny bit longer than expected

Though the title says 'sketch dump', I can't really call these sketches, since that would imply I drew them quickly...which is what I intended to do, but then detail happened. Sorta. Not sure what to call them though, since they're not really full-blown art pieces (at all). I do solemnly swear I'll make some proper art sometime soon though!

So yeah...Shingeki no Kyojin. I'm a bit late in joining the fray, but I absolutely LOVE this show. I'm aware of its various flaws, but its still wickedly awesome IMO. Most of these drawings were inspired by the various moments of angst in the show...which are of course, many, many moments. Which may explain why this thing is so humongous, tehe~

My favourite chars are probably Levi, for being made of win, and Jean & Armin, for their character development. Like that moment Armin stands up and gives his speech...<3 <3 <3 And Jean gets bonus points for being a snarky sunovabitch.

As stated in the top of the deviation, it contains spoilers for both the anime AND the manga, up to chapter 50. Ye be warned. Also spoilers in the rest of this AC.

About some of these sketches...I imagine some of them have a story behind them. The one with Erwin, for example. I liked the idea of him showing his determination and dedication, probably in response to someone suggesting he should quit the Recon Corps because of his injuries. And he'd do that salute (which is badass BTW) and just keep right on going.

The scene with Jean and Marco...I'm not a yaoi fangirl and the way I read them they are just bunkmates and best friends. This scene was simply intended to show them getting up in the morning (Marco saying something like, 'Don't get in another fight with Eren today!' and Jean being Jean). But in hindsight, it kinda looks like they shared more than a bunk that night, so I guess you can interpret at will.

I actually put way too much thought in the talking-to-the-headstone pic. Marco's remains were of course cremated, and no cemeteries are shown in the series...I wasn't sure if they maybe had a memorial wall or just scattered the ashes or whatever, so for the sake of the picture, I drew one of those headstones with a...what you call it, an ashtray? The little metal cylinder they store the ashes in.
Sketches of Armin because I love him - especially the scene where he lies to Bertolt to create an opening to save Eren. Though I am a little worried about the whole throwing away your humanity- if you do that, what's left to save, in the end?

Speaking of Bertolt, while they didn't initially really capture me, since their identities have been revealed the Titan Trio really fascinates me. I especially love Reiner and Bertolt's conflict and pain over what they're doing, it's both heart-breaking and infuriating. Rewatching the series while knowing they are the Colossal and Armoured Titan really changes perspectives on the events in the series.
Well, hence the drawing of a rather disturbed Reiner. He's probably being confronted by his former friends...maybe he lost it and let the 'soldier personality' take over, forcing himself into amnesia regarding his true nature, and he's confused about his friends drawing their blades on him. Or he's just trying to back away from a PMS-ing Annie.
Regarding the Annie x Bertolt picture, I'm not really sure I ship them. I believe Bertolt does have special feelings for Annie, and I could totally see them being IN a relationship and it being adorable, but I wouldn't know how they would START a relationship. Bertolt is such a doormat I'm sure Annie wouldn't consider him worth her time unless he showed he has a will of his own. I mean, remember how Eren was one of the few people that impressed her and made her smile, I think she could only be attracted to a person with a will as strong as hers. Still, I like the idea of Bertolt and Annie being together someday.

On a side note, Hannes doesn't get enough love. He's a wonderful character- very human, very relatable, and ultimately trying his best for Eren, Mikasa and Armin.

And I swear my heart broke when Connie got back home and no one was there to welcome him - I'm very curious as to how that is portrayed in the second season of the anime (if ever there will be one).

For me, one of the biggest strengths of the series is how it portrays the situation humanity in, and the desperation of their struggle...but also the hope and grit-your-teeth determination with which everyone chases the right to exist, the right to live, the right to see the world. The right to be free. Which is what I tried to capture in the sloppy sketch&painting of young Eren, Mikasa and Armin and their Recon Corps versions.

I think the rest of the pics speak for themselves...the comic was supposed to be shorter (but oh, the feels! I loved how they portrayed Levi's reaction to his team wiping, the horrified, shell-shocked discipline he showed. And that scene where Petra's body was thrown of the wagon is very haunting. I liked the interaction of the team, with some implications of Petra caring for Levi a little more than she does for others, and Oruo imitating Levi (in an attempt to impress Petra? Unrequited love~) Their death scenes were very well done, both in terms of animation and in terms of plot, once again establishing that anyone can die and the standard shounen solution of trusting your comrades is as likely to fail as to succeed (as poor Eren had to learn).
Because the comic turned out a little longer than expected, I had to fill the space bottom left...with random randomness! Enjoy. I did love doing those genderbends

Anyhoo, I'm rambling. Sorry for the wall of text Let me know what you think, both of this deviation and of SnK in general!

Reiner, I don't blame ya. Annie's terrifying as shit already, add PMS in there and you'll get your head bitten off. Quite literally.

I just want to say thank you for taking the time to answer my question and giving me resources. I hope to improve soon because I have been sad because I'm not at the level where I should be. I hope in at lest 3 months I see big change. Nothing like art gallery worthy but you know amazing worthy? SO I want to say thank you and I look forward to more of your art!

Don't worry about not drawing at the level you want to be - I think everyone has that feeling. I know I do! Just keep practicing and most importantly, have fun with it!

How do you draw poses like that? I 'm working on poses and they are not turning out that well... a lot of anatomy?

Shuukaku92 In reply to shannyofhyrule [2014-03-13 11:29:17 +0000 UTC]

Ah, that's a difficult question...I guess the simple answer would be, practice, but that's probably not very helpful...Personally I'm really bad at spontaneous drawings, so I'll first imagine how I want my character to be positioned, then make a rough sketch, similar to the 3D gear sketches in the upper right section, then throw a rough line art over that (on a separate layer in PS). For more detailed drawings I'd make a clean line art with more attention to line weight, but I didn't bother with that here.
Observation is very important; study how people move and position themselves in RL and in movies. Animation, both western and anime, gives great examples of stylized movements that real people don't actually make, but are more effective in communicating emotion, so really look at those at well. Drawings by other artists are a great resource as well, as are pictures. However, always be aware that if you're studying something someone else drew, their anatomy will never be perfect but influenced by their own style, so be careful you don't start copying other people's mistakes.
Knowledge of anatomy is important, though I'm still far from an expert, and I don't think you need to know every little thing about the human body to be able to draw a convincing pose. You have to know the main muscle groups and skeletal structures, and know the limits to which joints can bend so your poses won't become impossible. Also, some bones or muscle groups show under the skin (or become visible in a particular pose) and indicating them in your drawing can just give it that hint of realism. Examples would be the collarbones, the sternomastoid (the muscle running roughly from collarbone to ear, which particularly shows when the head is turned to the side), the deltoid in the upper arm/shoulder and the curve of the lower ribs in skinny people. For most of my anatomy in drawing, I use direct references (e.g. pictures or smth) or tutorials by tohers on DA. However, I also recommend you to pick up one or two books on this. You don't have to study them by heart, but I find I get more solid 'background knowledge' from books, and for specifics, I use tutorials or references.
I also think it's important not to split up the body in separate parts that move independently from each other, but as a connected whole. Balance and weight distribution are central to any pose, and the core muscles in your body work hard to maintain these - the difference between an action or a resting pose are often in the figure's weight distribution; imbalance indicates motion (because you cannot remain motionless when your out of balance, you'd fall over).
Proportion is another big one, and can be learned quite easily with some rules of thumb and lots of practice - things like 'a standing adult figure is about 6-8 heads tall, with chin to nipple, nipple to waist and waist to crotch being 1 head-length. Legs make up roughly half of the figures length. Elbows are at waist level, and hands touch halfway down the thigh when relaxed' (as my art teacher used to say, any shorter and your figure would not be able to wipe its butt). As you draw more, these proportions will become more natural to you, to the point that you barely have to consciously think to get them (kind of) right.
Finally, I always consider the purpose of the motion, the personality of my figure and the context. Every little drawing has a story behind it - this helps me make my poses more convincing, more varied, and my drawings more interesting. An example in this sketchdump would be the pic of Bertolt and Annie. Please note that the anatomy is really bad int hat one, but right know I mean to point out that there's a story going on. The two have finally been reuinited after what they all went through. Annie has always been a lone wolf and has never been shown in the series to be very close to Reiner or Bertolt, but nonetheless they share a mission, a conviction and a secret, so they must have been very connected even if they didn't interact much. But now, in his relief over her return, Bertolt reaches out to her, physically. This is still Bertolt, however, he wouldn't just hug her tight or romantically/erotically, so I placed his hands around her shoulders and neck, which makes the gesture more tender. Annie, being the loner she is, would not reciprocate without inhibition, so all I did was have her very lightly touch Bertolt's arm, with a tiny smile to show she accepts his concern and shares this moment with him, but still is still reserved in her own quiet way. Its actually not uncommon for me to write half a story/fanfic in my head while drawing

So yeah, this turned out to be a rather long comment XD Sorry, hope it helps. As a final tip, while drawing, flip your canvass every so often (or if you're drawing traditionally, hold your drawing in front of a mirror). This will 'refresh' your view of your drawing and make it much easier to spot mistakes. This is particularly important when your drawing is still in the rough stages, if its already very detailed and developed it becomes a pain to fix things.
For practice, I recommend doing gesture drawings, quick sketches of 30 seconds to 2 minutes that try to capture the essence of a pose, rather than anatomical detail. www.posemaniacs.com/thirtyseco… and artists.pixelovely.com/practic… offer very good resources for this.
Some tutorials and resources by other artists about poses (and hands and feet and abs and...) that I find to be very useful:

Finally, use lots and lots of references! I can't stress that enough. You have to look what people look like, not what you think they look like. I use a ton, especially for hands. Often I take a picture with my webcam of my own hands in the particular position to make sure I get it right. I did that for the hands in the picture of Mikasa giving Eren her scarf, and in Hannes' thumbs-up for example.

Good luck drawing!
