this is nova, a merperson who was scooped up as a fish because of how different she looked.
(another disclaimer: i saw this thing on pinterest that merpeople hatch as fish, and around age 1 they leave their homes to find over merpeople to take care of them. around age 3 they develop more human parts.)

nova was placed in an aquarium, and after a couple of years the vets saw how there was a literal baby head growing out of the fish’s face, so they took her out of the tank with hundreds of other fish and put her in her own where no one could see her.

years go by, and by age 13, nova is already so worn out from blood tests, agility tests, etc… though there’s this one vet who treated her like his own child. he’s the only one who kept her from ending it because he promised her every day that she would soon see the ocean.

when nova is fifteen, the vet that she grew to know as a father, had a heart attack and passed. it was so unexpected that her mental health took a huge dive, and she wouldn’t eat for days at a time.

it was only a week later did another vet come in, though he saw her as a monstrosity, as did many others.

but, the vets son, nolan, saw her differently. he spoke to her as he would speak to any other human.

nolan helped heal her, and interjected as often as he could when it came to those horrid tests.

nova and nolan became friends, and, yes, they both wanted more, but for very obvious reasons they couldn’t have it.
