Description
This was an image I did a while ago for a magazine called 'Four Minutes to Midnight' for their forthcoming 8th issue. It was inspired by numerous documentaries I had watched which dealt with advertisers and their methods of using psychology to find out exactly what is going through our minds when we see the company's products. This is basically my feelings about the bombardment of crap we are forced to see and listen to everyday. The image was all done with a biro.Related content

It really does seem that you can go nowhere these days and enjoy a lack of advertising. It is almost literally everywhere. Your character seems drained and confused at what to think or consume, an all to common theme these days. Really awesome you did it with a biro (where im from we call em ball point pens). Had to look that up.

Fantastic work. It's disturbing how much people are manipulated by companies. No wonder so many people seem to have such skewed priorities regarding material possessions, ads always overemphasize them so much.

I know this comment will get lost amongst the many, but I really just want to say how much I love this piece! Technical brilliance aside, I feel that you've captured the political issue better than so many others that have tried in the past. Fricken awesome.

I feel like its saying "People in the advertising world try too hard".
I know some people who work for these things & they're always trying to get 'younger' people to join the group only because they wanna know a more youthful opinion on today's fab favs or whatever >:]
The illustration is amazing though, full of detail & the blank stare gets to me XD

While I understand the advertising thing, I must say to some extent I disagree. Alot of people portray ad agencies as almost cruel. I have worked for a national ad company for alittle over 2 years now. My father has worked for one for around 21 years. Most of the time we get things that the client company wants. Its amazing how little control over advertising we have in some mediums. Just interesting to me at least. We have no psychology majors in our company or anything of the sort. Most are business and art majors. We have the people who deal with the clients, the people who design the actual content, several "touch up" groups, proof readers, legal, and studio artists who make sure the product is ready to be "shipped" as it where. I dont know, I ramble. Its a great illustration and god knows I agree with you on the bombardment crap. Dont take all the focus on the real people behind the ads though, not the advertisers, but the companies fronting the bill.

I'm not saying all people who work in the advertising agencies are bad, and I know not every ad agency will rely on psychologists, but some do and this piece was a reaction to that. Psychologists working in advertising are usually found in larger corporations, where they carry out numerous focus groups, and in some cases hypnotism to really get inside people's minds to try to find exactly why people buy their product and what their perceptions are of the brand in question. And yes, like you say, it is the corporations and large companies who want to go this far in finding ways to perfect their brand, and not necessarily the people carrying out the work.

Glad to see, sorry if I generalized your art. I didnt mean too. We are a pretty big company, we used to do TV commercials but have moved away and now strictly do print and radio. Im sure you have seen some of our work. We designed the McDonald's website as well as alot of the print in their stores, coupons, etc. Its funny that you mention focus groups. Before Cingular Wireless bought out AT&T Wireless we designed all the AT&T stores and the boxes/brochures that come with new phones. We use alot of focus group reports, but they are usually done by different companies or given to us by the corporation that is our client. So I guess in a way you are right and Im not really sure what my point is. Its just nice to have a conversation that centers around the topic of your piece.
