Yep, the numbers refer to the points on his ears. Seven happens to be the Kawlix number for bad luck, taboo, the unfortunate, etc. 

I had no place to really explain this earlier, but in Kawlix society any damage/alterations/mutilations to their ears is extremely looked down upon and basically just seen as 'wrong.' While having an ear length of seven was bad enough already, having damaged ears is considered a worse fate. It's shameful, really.

Ah, that makes sense.
For some reason I thought that 7 being bad luck was just Az [even though he didn't seem like the superstitious type to me]. Certainly didn't expect it to be the whole race.

So if a mutilated ear is bad, what about a missing one? //shot

A missing ear is just as bad, really. For a kawlix it'd be almost like being born without part of your limb. Ears and their hearing abilities are very important to their race, after all.
