Description This tutorial demonstrates in detail how to make an underbust or waist cincher Victorian corset using a synthetic sport mesh. Mesh corsets were made in the late Victorian, but they were constructed using strong, natural-fiber mesh, like linen canvas for embroidery. Heavy-duty sport mesh is a much more economical choice and works very well. Be sure to choose a mesh that is described for heavy-duty use, which has a mesh hole size of no more than 1/8".

When at a future date I make a mesh corset using natural fiber, I will take detailed photos and describe any differences in the construction.

Hmm, is this some sort of medieval torture device made by arcane and forbidden arts?

(Says the male who accidentally stumbled upon this page.)

Not at all. Β While not everyone is going to enjoy wearing them, they are not inherently dangerous, and can actually be quite beneficial. Β Modern medical back braces, for example, are pretty much identical to corsets. Β If you are interested in actually understanding the health risks and benefits of corsets, I would suggest starting here:Β lucycorsetry.com/how-corsets-h…

Oh, my apologizes.

I was just trying an attempt at humor, which obviously failed. I wasn't questioning your intentions, the desire of others to engage in textile artistic expression, or those who appreciate quality and classically designed clothing. I was trying to make fun of the ignorance of the typical male understanding of such things. My desire was to bring a bit of satrical cheer, not an accusation of anyone's artistic talents.

Clearly your have great artistic ability in the medium and I greatly appreciate your ability, and desire, to share your knowledge with others. In our dress down, lowest possible standard culture, it is encouraging that there are some who follow the old paths.

Again, my apologizes, and thank you for sharing your talents.

No problem. Β The joke was lost because it is so common for people to misunderstand and believe rumor that corsets are torture devices. Β The vast majority of comments of that nature are quite serious. Β I am glad that in this case it was a joke. Β

Vary well detailed! I like it!

I am assuming one could use regular(but sturdy) fabric instead of mesh to make a regular Victorian corset.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 2

sidneyeileen In reply to Brodys-Babe [2010-05-05 00:24:59 +0000 UTC]

Thanks.

There are many different methods of creating a regular Victorian corset, but I would not recommend using this method to do so. It is far more complicated than necessary, and would result in ridiculously thick seams. The extra turning is only needed to compensate for the potential instability and weakness of the mesh material.

I haven't written a tutorial about normal corset construction yet, but I will get to it sooner or later.
