Prompt entry for Gloomy over at Celestial-Seas ! The colors of Novis are sooo beautiful, I really enjoyed taking a break to do this. I was originally going to submit this to my RPG account but liked it enough to post here ; u ;

Short story:

“I got one!”, Lapis cried. She had resurfaced from beneath the cascade in an excited burst, carrying a dimly lit crystal in her hand. “This should be enough I believe”. She gathered the pile of gems in her arms as she made her way towards Rhistel, who was waiting for her, kitbull in his lap, on the bank of the pool.

Thankfully, the magic energy was strong here due to the overlapping ley lines, so the crystals themselves already were charged with a decent amount of magical energy. Lazuli fluttered to her side, carrying a small crystal in its hands as well, chirping as if to say “I can help too!”. Lapis took the gem from its hand and gently crouched down next to the dark-colored kitbull. It seemed frightened, shivering slightly as she approached, but she tried to calm it down and held up her hands in innocence. Lazuli also made an effort to express the safety of the situation. Something about seeing another kitbull perhaps calmed the smaller one down.

Rhistel had been maintaining an effort to keep the fluffy little fellow from scurrying away, arms around the puff but not too tight. “Should I let it go now?” He asked, the expression on his face making it clear he was worried it would claw his eyes out.

“Place it next to our pile,” Lapis said. “If it wants to go away, that’s okay too. But at least it will have this hoard to return to later.” Rhistel hesitated at first, but then gingerly put the dark kitbull next to the crystal pile. It seemed frozen at first for several seconds, and Lapis and Rhistel didn’t dare breath, afraid it would break the silence and send it scurrying. After a few moments of silence however, the kitbull gently swatted the gems, then after a pause, started rubbing against them and purring happily. Lapis shot a smile to Rhistel, who returned the gesture with a grin. “I think it’ll be ok!” he said. They sat down and watched as the kitbull played with the rocks, tossing them around and rolling in them.

After a few minutes, the kitbull seemed as jumpy and eager as if nothing had ever been wrong. It peeped and purred gleefully, rubbing itself against their legs. Lazuli joined in and the two started chasing each other playfully. Lapis sat content next to her partner. “Makes you wonder though,” she began. This place seems very quiet and peaceful, and is exceptionally gorgeous. What do you think could have given this poor thing such a fright?”

“Beats me,” Rhistel replied. “Hopefully whatever it is, it doesn’t show up again.”

Lapis nodded. They were about to get up when the black kitbull noticed and perked immidiately, running to their side and hiding between Rhistel’s legs, as if it had made its new home there. “Is everything okay buddy?” Rhistel asked. Lapis shot him a confused look. “Maybe we should stick by it for now? Let it tag along?” she offered. Lazuli looked especially happy with that idea and bounced around.

“Guess that’s that,” She said, picking up the small fluffball and continuing with Rhistel and Lazuli into the purple grove.
