Let me just have a moment of Majora's Mask joy vicariously sent to you. And all you said was pretty well true!

Link's Awakening was another game where Link was a stranger in a strange land- or a strange dream. But in my opinion (and basically adding onto yours), another reason MM was so cool and captivating was because it was dark, but not over-the-top-Link-cried-tears-of-blood-style junk. And it takes a special kind of weirdness to pull that off.

But now I am semi-contradicting you about the above in this way: As that Link, I honestly always felt like an outsider (a generally liked and accepted one that was raised in the area, but never fully *belonging*) so MM worked to tell me a little more about the story of my favorite silent protagonist. "You're a Kokiri! Whoops! No, you ain't!" "Oh, Link, you saved me and all of Hyrule! Let me reset everything so that this neeeeever happened!" "Oh, Link, you're done journeying? Smell ya later! I'm a fairy gon' fly awaaaaay...." and then Majora's Mask happens and he assumes the form of nigh alternate-reality versions of himself (Darmani was admittedly more like Darunia, but the similarities still stand) and then (if you get the Fierce Diety's Mask) basically becomes a demigod of what is presumably anger. Hm!
The FD mask is hardly benevolent.

Oh, Link's Awakening was good, too! Although the ending was pretty cheerful for the darker concepts inherent to a dreamworld. And waking up in the middle of a freaking ocean with absolutely nothing. Yeah, Link! There's tons to smile about! Come back here, you stupid Wind Fish and get me outta here! But yes, a good dark atmosphere, I'd think, hits certain fears and horrors without being repulsive.

Aw, man. I guess Link could have some serious issues himself. Hero work can't all be sunshine and rainbows for a 10 year-old who became a 17-year-old and then back again without a friend in the world. What if Majora's Mask had gotten a hold of him instead of the Skull Kid? D: Or maybe the FD mask feeds off Link's resentment as MM did of the Skull Kid? Who knows? Fanfic material!

Sifl-senpai In reply to Zicygomar [2012-07-27 21:30:06 +0000 UTC]

If Zelda were repulsive, it would probably fit into an entirely different genre of game.
And let's face it- Nintendo ain't big on horror.

Hero work ain't all sunshine and rainbows for anyone, I don't think, but especially not him.

And while the whole interperitation of events is totally bordering on the realm of fanfic material (and honestly my personal "headcanon" for that Link ), it is, in-game, implied that the Skull Kid only succumbed to Majora's Mask because he was too weak-hearted/spirited to withstand it. I think it's Tatl who says it, but it might've been Tael- whoever it was, the phrase was done in that Zelda-equivalent to italics, where they color the text.
The FD mask probably does feed off of Link in some way, but the idea is that Link was strong enough to control it and make it do his bidding instead. Link was also strong enough to take it off, which says a lot to me, too!

Although, when you next see that Link, he's the ghost of a Stalfos. So even if he came back to Hyrule or whatever, he went to die in the woods that turned him because he didn't belong.

He's the most glorious Stalfos EVER, but still.

Oh! And while we're talking about theories...
Ganondorf in general has always been one of my favorite villains. And (I know he's basically born of Demise, so the god-thing is redundant. I did finally get to play Skyward Sword... <3) his big goal, besides taking over Hyrule, is pretty much to acquire power, the thing that ultimately corrupted him (and might possibly have been Demise's original vessel, just in case Nintendo didn't want to keep it simple and just have him recreate himself as a human like Hylia??? It doesn't matter either way) and become a god in allll senses.

But isn't it ironic

that the wee boy who eventually struck him down, actually succeeded in becoming a dark god?

Ah, deeper interpretations of games. Brings me back to when I was still in a Zelda forum. Nintendo really does need to get on the ball for a MM remake so I can at least justify buying my 3DS with another game. Because it's been way too long since I've played MM. But yeah. Link being able to harness the power of a dark god says so much through so little. Nintendo seems to be good at simplicity.

OoT/MM Link being the old hero in TP was always kind of a mind bender for me. Not that I don't believe it; that's obviously what's not-so-subtly implied. It's just that it opens up all these weird questions. Mostly ones involving where he got that flippin' sweet looking armor. Anyways, I approve of this no-country-for-displaced-heroes interpretation.

Link beating Ganny at being a dark god. That is pretty funny. Man, Ganondorf should take up trying to save the world sometime. He might actually succeed at something for once. It's done wonders for Bowser.

I have really never been in a forum. They sound fun and exotic, particularly the modern online kind and not the boring Greek "Let's all sit in a circle and debate over regulations" kind. I realize that sounds like I have it backwards.

Nintendo is AMAZING at simplicity. It's, like, the key to their entire aesthetic AND plots!!!

As cool as MM 3DS sounds, I'm of the school of thought that it would be even nicer to have them just keep basic plot and characters and maybe add just a few things and transform the game into, like, a Wii game. They could really go crazy with the art style, too- perhaps a darker color scheme with more vibrant key colors- red, green, and purple (much like it already is) and factor in something reminiscent of [link] and [link] and character design like this... sort of: [link] at least in terms of that odd, can-kinda-be-cute-but-also-encompass-creepy way (ignore the purple... uh, yeah.). And normal-looking people could still fit in alright with that style, too.

I KNOW that's messing with a classic, but it could work!!!

Then again, I'm also hoping they beautify A Link To The Past because that game was wonderful as is. But think of how vast and gorgeous a Hyrule AND DARK WORLD THAT'S MORE HANDS-ON AND RELEVANT THAN THE ONE TWILIGHT AREA IN TWILIGHT PRINCESS would be if it were revamped out of top-down??
I mean, the talking trees, the monster people, TURTLE ROCK, using quake and ether and bombos-- the dungeon with Blind and the boy and his magic flute.... Ahhh, I'm sorry I always go off on tangents when I reply to you. I kind of go crazy.

Learning the old skeleton was Link was more an affirmation that my opinion of the character had some weight. I was so happy to see that skeleton for the first time in TP.

And as for the armor, I think he got it in Ikana. He was, after all, named captain of the army of the dead. And that reminds me- I played/introduced MM to a friend and I flat-out laughed when she chose to name Link "Death" with no prior knowledge of the game.

Awwww but Ganondorf is my favorite villain!!! And honestly, villainy-wise and class-wise, Bowser just doesn't compare.
...Link would be a horrifying villain.

Zicygomar In reply to Sifl-senpai [2012-08-06 06:02:25 +0000 UTC]

They can take some getting used to though. Like, Plato and Aristotle would get into these huge arguments about the timeline, and Socrates refused to accept Wind Waker into canon because he felt way too connected to Hyrule to let it be flooded, and Aristotle pranked Plato by replacing "Hyrule" with "Atlantis" in all of his writings. Fun times.

It's funny you should mention pictures like those. I recently Tumbl'd upon some of the MM concept art, that, while never implemented, definitely seemed to serve as the inspiration for all the bizarre designs, or at least set the tone and atmostphere. [link] Oh, and then there was this thing: [link]

I have never gotten to play ALttP. I know I can probably just buy one of the Wii cards or something and get it on virtual console, but I also kinda want to go to the local vintage video games store and see if they have it with a SNES. OLD SCHOOL.

It's true, when it comes to class and villainy, sometimes you just can't beat a dark lord. And Link would be a terrifying villain. Just think, no pot in the world would be safe! Under his tyrannical reign, all closets would be checked! He'd demand every the heart of every firstborn! He'd smoke around you whether you disliked it or not!

YOU. You can just talk to me about anything at any time, whether I'm familiar with the topic or not because that forum gag I just found extremely funny just now.

But the real question is, did Plato still theorize that Hyrule went around the sun rather than the universe revolving around Hyrule?
Or perhaps did he discuss theories on the moon's orbit in relation to Termina instead?

Also did Socrates accept the split timeline theory because Hyrule survived 2/3 times, or did you leave before that can of worms was open?

Ah!! I can see remnants of those concept images in Woodfall and Ikana, definitely!!!!

But that image. That image of Link. I've never had the werewithall to look up "MM concept art" on google or Tumblr or anything but where did you find that image? Are there more? Will you show me? That imago of Link----!!!!!! In some ways, that's the image-or at least the look- that I want my art to have, ESPECIALLY images of Link. There are ones in my sketchbook like that. Oh my gosh. I... Zicy, thank you so much for showing that to me.

I played ALttP on my GameBoy Advance and it's seriously one of my favorite Zelda games. But, as someone who had the luxury of playing Earthbound on a real SNES, I can totally see the appeal of playing it on the original system. SNES's have some legitimate charm. (Also, if at all possible, start the game on a dark and stormy night- or just at night. It makes a great effect.)

But since you showed me that art, which may have replaced my favorite Zelda concept art, it's my turn to return the favor and show you cool Zelda art. This gallery contains what is (or used to be?) some of my favorite Zelda art and it's for A Link to the Past/Link's Awakening backstory: [link]
(My personal favorite image of Link is actually this one, though:[link] It just has some kind of charm. :/)

Pffffffft ha ha ha! Pot and smoking! I see what you did there! But- BUT! Doesn't he do all of those things already, as a *good* guy?????

Zicygomar In reply to Sifl-senpai [2012-08-09 15:27:15 +0000 UTC]

I didn't really visit the timeline thread that often, since I didn't particularly care about linking all the games together, but these guys had their debates all over. Like Sheik's gender, or I guess more denotatively accurate, Sheik's sex? That was a doozy. Being philosophers, they had all sorts of psychological and biological points and counterpoints and that was mess. And then someone brought up the Fourth Triforce theory, but they all just called him an idiot.

I think it was Copernicus started some discussion on if Termina was on the same planet as Hyrule or an alternate dimension, but I can't remember how that went down. Socrates was a huge fanboy though, and I think some of his arguments got big enough that he got in trouble with the mods. Oddly enough, I think he somehow banned himself when he heard the mods were going to ban him anyways. They called it the Trial and Banning of Socrates. No idea what he was trying to prove.

If you haven't googled "majora's mask concept art" already, that's where I got it. There really isn't much, but I looked up some resources from neoseeker([link] ) and zeldac([link] ). Hopefully, some MM stuff was in that Zelda Art Book they released (sorta recently?) and someone uploaded some scans, but I haven't checked.

Hm, I can't seem to access the first link (doh ho ho). It may be proxy issues from where I am? I have seen some of the ALttP art, liked the painted scenes, which are awesome, but I think they'd have more meaning if I'd played the game. And of course that second pic has its charm! That little guy is the one who started it all!

As for Link as a villain, true, he already does do all those things as a good guy... but as a bad guy, he'd being doing all those things... in a Ghirahim outfit. That's where the true horror lies.

Buh huh huh the only ones I care about any SEMBLANCE of order are OoT/MM, Windwaker/Phantom Hourglass, and A Link To The Past/Link's Awakening. Everything else is free reign for me. (Also what the heck is even the big deal about Shiek's gender. I thought Nintendo explained this early on-Zelda can magically change her gender-therefore genetalia- at will and Shiek was just the appearance and identity she was using for her shapeshifted self. ...Then again, watching people back-and-forth about that sounds like it could be pretty funny all on its own. "Does he/she/it or does he/she/it not have a penis?")

Socrates banned himself HA HA HA HA I wish I could cleverly add to this. I concede defeat!

I googled it the other day, after you showed me those images. So apparently they were originally going to have a Link mask????? I can't say I'm sad that they cut out the adult form, though. (I'm a horrible fangirl in that I actually don't like adult Link. :/)

Ehhh, there is more than just one Link. I'll find you another one later... eventually. (when I find a good one. Uhhh) but they basically look like they oughta be in an American comic. Link looks, like, uber-manly but not so much so that he looks like Clark Kent. Does that make sense?

I LIKE HOW THAT SECOND IMAGE OF LINK HAS HIM CARRYING ALL OF HIS CRAP. And also that DETERMINED face.

Girahim outfit?
Tingle outfit.

Zicygomar In reply to Sifl-senpai [2012-08-13 14:33:50 +0000 UTC]

Same here; if the game isn't obviously directly connected, I don't particularly care about the timeline. Except for Skyward Sword, which was all "This game is the beginning of EVERYTHING" and it actually made sense, so that was cool. And Sheik. There's a reason he/she/it never became a Pokemon trainer. Those professors absolutely HAVE TO KNOW or no adventures.

Socrates was banned, but one user didn't quite understand the terminology of a "banned" user and a "locked" thread, and noted about Socrates that the mods got "him lock." I'm sure that was a reference to something.

Ghirahim. Tingle outfit. There are ideas forming in this brain of mine that I am sure I will regret should I ever put them to paper. The gears are turning, and they sound like screams.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Sifl-senpai In reply to Zicygomar [2012-08-14 04:13:37 +0000 UTC]

Okay, well, Skyward Sword was relevant to everybody's timeline.

Sheik can't ever be a trainer??? You're right! How sad.

...Perhaps it can be one of the actual Pokemon from the original first generation games, back before they had genders. In fact- it's the unattainable legendary that you can only get from the partner game. And Ganondorf is the player. Link is the Gary Motherf***ing Oak figure. Or you could switch it, I guess.

I'll bet it was about then that Hippocratus decided to start a new thread and make fun of them all for taking this so seriously. Probably said something like "I'm starting a joke thread so it won't get out of hand. Don't take it personally- it should do no harm, it's just for laughs."

I hope you know that I'm wearing a Music Box Man smile as I turn the little crank in that brain of yours to make the screams come out faster, and possibly the visualization on paper. And most likely tears from your eyes are being squeezed out of that crank and gears, too. It's like a rainstorm coming from your face and the screams a special, magic little song.

Maybe in like seven years or something you will make me regret ever teaching you that little song and making my own head spin 'round and 'round as I fathom the gravity of my actions.

Zicygomar In reply to Sifl-senpai [2012-08-15 13:28:31 +0000 UTC]

That's it. Sheik doesn't have a gender. Sheik is a legendary Pokemon. That explains everything. Ganondorf absolutely must be the player character because of this: [link] .

I believe Hippocratus was one of the mods. No idea how he had time for that while he was setting the foundation for modern medical science, but he did it.

And here is the result of your seven year music box time paradox:[link] . Dear god.

DAT

GIRATINGLE.

OHMIGOSH, I'M CRYING ENDLESS TEARS NOW. Except I don't know if they are of joy, amusement, sheer horror, or gratitude. I'm.... I'M A STORM OF EMOTIONS RIGHT NOW. FORGET THE MUSIC BOX MAN, I'M THE SUMMONED STORM, IT'S ME. You are the windmill, and this... abomination-masterpiece (abomimasterpiece? Masternation) is Link.

The Tinglehim is Link.
...take that as you will.

Is the Tingirahim or whatever a genderless legendary too can Zelda Pokemon be a thing now

Also that picture of Ganondorf as a trainer. His eyes had all the joy of youth and adventure and--- his trainer strategy is legit (but personally I find it very unlike Ganondorf in most respects. although the punching in the face thing would explain what happened to the King of Hyrule in adult Link's OoT timeline.)

Hippocratus was a mod. Hmm. Well, if Socrates got wind of his banning before he was actually banned, Hippo mut not have been doing that great of a job at moderating.

He was just overworked in excess instead. *ba-dum-tch!*

I just felt like Twinmold was randomly there. Throwing open the doors to the Stone Tower, in a level that had a lot of established history and backstory, obviously unleashed a curse and I just wish they'd've mentioned that the monster was the source of the curse, whether it was created by Majora or not (and it may not have been, since the giants, masks, and Ikana are so old.) Or made Twinmold some weird, cursed-looking monster-things versus weird, cool-lookin' bug things. :/ Whatever, I'm just picky.
There, I ranted and now I'm done. XD

It was. Except when they take Romani, how in the world does she get back to the Ranch? I failed, and then came back for the Dog race thing, and got sidetracked and found her in the house. It doesn't make much sense, seeing as the aliens [ghosts] took her.

I think it's 'cause she isn't a cow. So the aliens didn't want her. They wiped her memory, did some tests, and then dumped her back.
