yep, it was a glass table masked off around the sides & top with black cloth leaving a hole in the top, then a glass bowl filled with water and a glass the same height as the bowl with the crystal ball on top of that, strobe under the table firing up through the table/bowl/water/crystal ball for the glowing crystal ball effect and dry ice in the water for the smoke.

great concept and tutorial , 1 question though how did you manage to get the red in the crystal ball and also not get a reflection of yourself and camera in it?

Red was with photoshop - the vertical shot I have in the tutorial was pretty much accurate colours, the horizontal one I used a bit more artistic license with though.
Reflections weren't really an issue as the glass of the ball was quite clear, it tended to refract rather than reflect.

Thanks for the reply, I've got to try something similar at some point when I Eventually get a decent lighting setup, I'm not after a setup that costs the earth just something better than a Halogen site light and a security light screwed to a lump of wood

Breathtaking! Fantastic lighting and idea, I really love how the lighting is backlit against the smoke.

Awesome Ben.
I'm glad you are revealing your setups now!
If you want to get even more daring you should post a kind of "behind the scenes" shot in your blog
Did you intend to show the rim of the glass under the ball? I can see it in both images.

Not really and it did cross my mind to edit it out, but in the end I was too lazy.
I've been thinking about doing some of these tutorials for a while now and I always mean to shoot behind the scenes setups...never remember to on the day though, I think I must be the world's youngest forgetful old man...

Ben this rocks! I haven't had the smoke machine out since buying the D3 and that's in part due to my desire to play with dry ice instead - expecting it would give effects such as this. Only your use of dry ice ended up even better than the shoot I was planning looked in my own head. That you did this without hassles on your first go is just brilliant. Great tutorial mate.

Well I guess that depends on what someone was trying to do with it doesn't it? As is doesn't appear to be real it's kinda a moot argument though...

Did you layer different images to create this one? It looks fantastic.

No layers, if you read the info underneath, there's a link to a tutorial I wrote about how I shot it.
Cheers!
