I recently read the common saying, "If you're not part of the solution, you're part of the problem." Its a phrase I've never liked. It's just like Bush scolding the world "If you're not with us, You're with the terrorists." It's a horrible phrase because it's nearly always abused, often by radical psychos. But when I last saw the phrase, I realized that there was an instance where this maxim applies.
"Apathy should be added to the seven deadly sins."
Religious connotations aside, I couldn't agree more. In actuality, the sin 'Sloth' can more accurately be translated as 'Apathy'. Which is of course far more dangerous, damaging and destructive, arguably more so than many of the other sins. Comfort breeds apathy, and both flourish in modern America - and the state of the country and the world is as bad as it is as a direct result.

apathy should be added to the seven deadly sins, making it eight deadly sins, so true. I avoid all seven sins for the most with the exception of lust, lol, but if apathy was added then that'd make it two sins i'm bound to. If only i could get over these two no telling where i'd be right now, i sure wouldn't be typing here instead of studing or going to sleep early, but alas i'm addicted as much as an alcoholic needs they're alcohol or a smoker needs his tabacco, i hope that someday i will be free of these chains, and in turn guide those in oppression to freedom, just beyond the dark, grim horizon i can see a infinitesimal glimmer of light, or perhaps it is just my mind playing tricks on me, either way i hope, the only thing i cling to, the very ideal that keeps many of us sane.

I'm not sure that I agree, though I do respect the idea.
To me, apathy is identifying the right and wrong choices and simply choosing not to care for either. It's selfish, defintely. But I wouldn't call it evil.
I am favouriting this though, because I do like the idea.

Is caring about the wrong things preferable to not caring at all?
Would you prefer a government that wants to know everything, or one that doesn't want to know anything?
I believe; That the 'apathy' exhibited in most modern civilizations is the product of allowing the people the option between caring, and letting someone else care FOR them.
Apathy is never a good thing, but I rather prefer it to fanaticism.

Apathy does not come from ignorance or being stupid, this seems to be a very common misconception. It's not like I don't know what the effects of my apathy are, I just don't give a shit and even if I wanted to, I can't. What am I supposed to care with? I have no emotions, no feelings.. and no, this is not because I am stupid and if that's what you think then keep in mind that my grades are close to that of a genius. And that's even though I don't even care, not even a little bit.

Amazing thank you. Its funny I came across this me and my roommate were just talking about activist burn out and the feeling of taking on the world in a struggle to make things better. I couldn't agree more with the sentiment of this piece on the matter.
