He has a disease that crippled one of his legs from the knee down. The knee joint is not very stable and the calf muscles are very weak and somewhat paralyzed, so for a long time he required a crutch on the left side to walk. The best he could get until now was a soft brace that kept the leg straight. His sister has been working hard to support the both of them as he is too young to work and his leg would prevent him from doing a lot of basic work. She worked to save for a replacement for his leg when he reaches adulthood. Such a thing is still quite costly and intrusive.
Ava learns of this and both she and Photon work together to construct a much more effective brace, one that can be used to supplement the lost functionality of his knee and muscles using springs and thin sheets of metal. The springs allow the knee to bend much more naturally and the metal exterior both keeps the brace rigid on the outside (the inside is padded) and gives the leg protection from the elements. The brace is harnessed up to a belt around the thigh (where the springs attach to the kneepad and the back of the brace) and then further up around the hips like a belt (to keep everything in place).
He will need replacements and fitting for braces as he ages and grows, but this is a much more useful substitution for the otherwise useless soft braces he had until now. These will be used until he is old enough to get the leg outright replaced with a smart prosthetic.
