Description The long awaited part 4 of the "The end of the Swedish Empire" triology!
part 1: fav.me/d7q8eiv
part 2: fav.me/d7rhwd9
part 3: fav.me/d7u8zqr
part 5: fav.me/d81nxxj

From this point on- or rather from the end of part 3 i would say- it's just going downhill

Ah, back to the very real organisation "Sw3dN h8Rz club". After Poltava, the countries that had been defeated earlier in the war wasted no time before attacking Sweden again.

Meanwhile, Charles XII of Sweden had fled to the Ottoman Empire, along with the scarce remains of the carolean army. The Sultan was originally happy to have him as a guest, as the Swedish King still had his reputation as a young undefeatable warrior hero. The Swedes were allowed to settle in the town Bender (nowadays in Moldavia). Due to none of them liking russia that much, Sweden had allied with the ottoman empire. Charles XII now spendt most of his time trying to convince the turks into going to war against Russia. On the 20th of november 1710, the sultan did declare war on Russia, and Peter the Great was completely defeated in 1711 in the Battle of Pruth. Sadly, the turks let him get away pretty easily, before the Swedish king got there.

Back in Sweden, things were getting steadily worse. Sweden had suffered bad harvests lately, and the high taxes and duties brought by the war also took their toll. As most of the Carolean army had been either killed or taken prisoner in Russia, a new army had to be raised and transported as well. For the first time, of the up-until-then 10 year long war, fighting took place in Sweden, when Denmark made an attempt to regain Scania (Skåne) in late 1709. The Swedes managed to defend themselves though, and defeated the Danes in the battle of Helsingborg on the 28th of February 1710. In the summer of 1710, the last big plague outbreak arrived in sweden, makind the already bad situation even more miserable. Russia had since Poltava also gone into Finland. In the battle of Storkyro in february 1714, Russia won a decisive victory and occupied Finland. There was at the moment nothing Sweden could do to get it back. The period of Russian occupation of Finland is known as "Greater Wrath" as the Russians were very harsh. Plundering and looting was common, and the population had to pay large contribution to the occupying forces. The Russians also employed their beloved scorched earth policy, and thousands of people were killed or taken prisoners.

Back in Turkey, people was getting tired of Charles XII. It cost a lot to keep him there, and the Ottomans were no longer interested in fighting russia, which made the swedish king into a troublesome diplomatic element. In february 1713 the turks had gotten so tired of him that a group of 10 000 people marced to his house to capture him and the other Swedes in the city. Charles XII was not a man who gave up easily, so he and 43 others fortified themselves inside the house, shooting at the attackers. This went on for seven hours until the ottomans came up with the idea of shooting fire arrows onto the roof of the house to smoke the Swedes out. Charles stormed out of the house with a gun in one hand and a sword in the other - and then tripped on his own riding spurs. The turks close to him immediately threw themselves over him, each wanting to be the one who captured the swedish king. This event has since been known as Kalabaliken i Bender, and the actual story is much more amusing than what i drew. Charles XII was then put in house arrest in Demotika. When he was released, he decided to leave the Ottoman empire as there was nothing more to do there.

In just 14 days, charles XII rode from Pitesti to Stralsund (in Swedish pomerania). The ride went trough Romania, Hungary, Austria, Bavaria, Württemberg, Pfalz, Westphalia and Mecklenburg (a bunch of german states not pictured since they aren't in hetalia. The other charactes were fun to draw though, especially HRE that cute baby <3 . The holy roman emperor ordered that the swedish king should be welcomed with grandeur, and many people probably wanted to get a glimpse of this mythical figure. Charles, however, wanted to travel incognito, and wore one of those baroque wigs he usually refused to wear. Stralsund was seiged by Denmark, Saxony, Prussia, Hanover and even Russia, and in the end of 1715 the city fell. Charles XII escaped just before this happened, and was after fifteen years back on Swedish soil.
*cue cheesy romantic music playing in the background*
And somehow, this has turned into some weird Nation/leader shipping thing. you can probably see I was getting tired at this point...

After everything they had been through, most people in Sweden were rather tired of the war, and hoped the return of the king would signify its end. Of course, Charles XII being Charles XII, it did not.  So what happened next? well, you'll have to wait until the next part to find out...

Yep, the great king he was. Peter gave him a feast and called him a "teacher" after the sea victory for a reason.

^_^ somehow this "Great Wrath" of yours and the rest of horrors aren't even mentioned in National museum in Helsinki ^_^ sounds like a Cold War tale and resembles how European countries were treating each other. Of course, there's a HUGE urge to rewrite history and make Russia a bully instead ^_^ That's understandable ^_^

Awesome drawings, and absolutely great skills. Thanks for doing such a great job!

I am fairly convinced the Great Wrath is not a piece of cold war propaganda, seeing as it has its own page on wikipedia en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Finland_… and is mentioned in several history books about the Great Northern War (Sadly I don't remember which books).
The national museum of Helsinki covers a period from the stone ages to the present, so it's not that surprising that it doesn't give that much attention to an occupation that only lasted for seven years. There are more important things in history. I guess it should also be mentioned that while under Russian rule from 1809-1917, Finland was actually treated very decently compared to other provinces, and was given more independence than it had had under Sweden.
And the Russians being viewed as brutes is by no means a stereotype that started during the Cold War either, just look at Voltaire's (probably not entirely accurate) descriptions of the country in his biography of Charles XII.
I'm by no means saying the Russians were the only ones who treated people badly though - with it being a pretty big war and all. The Caroleans could be extremely ruthless, there are examples of them torturing civilians for information and burning down whole villages.
This comic is told from Sweden's point of view, and as Russia is the biggest threath to him, which is why he ends up being the bad guy in this comic. It's certainly subjectively told.

I'm commenting on all four parts that you've currently drawn when I say this, but your comics are brilliant. Great art, and just the right balance of humour and facts to make this an entertaining account of events. My love of Swedish history has been increasing as of late, so its helpful having these comics (and the descriptions) so that I can better understand things. Keep up the good work, these comics deserve far more love in my opinion.
