Description
An original incarnation of Princess Zelda used in my ongoing Legend of Zelda fanfiction, which can be found here on DA: silent-n.deviantart.com/art/Th… or here on FanFiction.net: www.fanfiction.net/s/12487384/… All artwork related to this fanfic uses the hashtag: #loztrispiritThis was drawn in Art Academy: Home Studio on my Wii U (although the text was added via Windows Paint on my laptop). I was going for a painting-like look_which ended up being a little more faded than I intended, but I guess it's alright. (I also initially planned to draw her with both arms out, but after a long and vexatious struggle to get her visible hand to look right, I decided not even to bother with the other one and just put it behind her back instead. Haha)
Her full name is "Zelda Daphne Hyrule", daughter of King Roark Flavius Hyrule and Queen Amaranth. Her design draws inspiration from the Princess Zelda in Oracle of Ages & Oracle of Seasons combined with a scrapped design for Twilight Princess that can be seen on page 174 of Hyrule Historia. Her middle name is a reference to King Daphnes Nohanson Hyrule from The Wind Waker.

Backstory:
It is an undying Hyrulean tradition for every firstborn female to be born into the royal family of Hyrule to be named "Zelda" in reverence to the goddess Hylia who once became mortal for a time and lived by that name. However, by the time this incarnation of Zelda was born onto King Roark and Queen Amaranth, the past five generations born into the royal family before her had only been sons, making her the first princess to bear the name since her great-great-great-great-grandmother (i.e. the Princess Zelda from Four Swords) who lived more than 200 years before her, marking her birth as an honorable occasion in Hyrulean history.
As the crown princess, she has lived her life held to strict standards by her father and was not allowed to participate in anything that King Roark deemed "unladylike", which prevented her from enjoying the simplicity of childhood and was rarely, if ever, allowed to play with other children her age. Her best friend growing up was Princess Rutoria De Bon of the Zora tribe (who goes by the nickname "Ruto", though she is not the same incarnation of Ruto from Ocarina of Time) whose father was much more tolerant of children's behavior and allowed her to act more freely. The two princesses would often play together as children when their respective fathers had their political meetings, which was the only time Zelda could truly experience what it was like to be a carefree little girl instead of having to constantly follow the expectations of acting as a picture-perfect princess all the time. King Roark did not condone Ruto's tomboyish behavior, but because she was the daughter of his closest ally King Zora, he tolerated her company with Zelda. As the two princesses grew older, however, they gradually grew apart and Ruto eventually came to resent the entire royal family of Hyrule -including even Zelda- after a certain political incident that was not so favorable for the Zora tribe.
The only other person in Zelda's life whom she can truly regard as family other than her mother is the Sheikah woman Impa; her royal attendant who has acted as a second mother to her since birth and even helped with the delivery when Zelda was born while the doctor was delayed. With Queen Amaranth often busy and King Roark being more of a ruler than a family-man, Impa's constant care and guidance has helped Zelda get through many tough times and grow into the mature and kind-hearted girl she is today. She remains perhaps the closest person in the Hylian princess's life and the one who understands her best. Impa remains ever protective of Zelda and cares for the young princess just as if she was her own daughter.
At the start of the story, Princess Zelda is having her 18th birthday, which includes a coronation ceremony to officially proclaim her legal to rule Hyrule on her own if anything should befall King Roark and Queen Amaranth, and she chooses to open Hyrule Castle to the public for the celebration so that even commoners can attend. Of course, such a wide verity of unknown guests showing up freely at the castle that day requires special precautions to be made to make sure no trouble is in the making, and so the legendary knight Sir Pent is tasked with recruiting every able-bodied swordsman he knows to assist the royal guard that day and keep a careful watch on the guests.
After all, Hyrule certainly wouldn't want to take any risk of some evil cult taking advantage of the situation and sneaking an army into the castle to raid it...right?
