What I want to know is if it takes a purple sharpness weapon to pierce the armor of a monster, then how are we able to not only cut into the monster from mounting, but carve into it with a dinky knife?

It's really a problem!
I'm a beginner and didn't got it when I killed a royal ludroth and tried to get his tail for my armor

Or better yet, just carve the tail separately.

All the hunters know : Rule # 1, never cut off the tail after the defeat of the beast...
otherwise, it will activate the anti-theft system of the monster and make every explode !

simple: It is an insult to the hunter's honour to do such a thing. If they are to sever it's tail, there must be challenge, and thus, if the beast dies before the tail is cut, it's no longer a worthy challenge and thus leaves no reason to cut it [even IF you love getting extra rewards ]. It is also an insult to a worthy opponent to desecrate their body after they die
No, that is not the official reason. It's just my way of explaining it

Well that may be true that desecrating the dead body of a worthy opponent is not allowed in proper warriors honor. We are hunters, and we carve pieces off of the body to wear as armor and use as weapons. Which is also to show respect to the beasts as it is a sign that we acknowledge their power enough that we would carry a piece of them wherever we went. There is also the possibility that although you are the one who hunted the beast, its corpse does not belong to you. I think that the person who ordered the quest would also like the spoils of the hunt and the beast's body would technically belong to said person. The rewards at the end of quests could explain this as well, since we don't get everything that the body could offer, the person who posted the quest likely gives us the hunters only a small portion and keeps the rest for themselves, especially the much coveted tail and bone marrow. So in essence, when we carve monsters and cut of their tales, we're basically taking a little extra on the side in addition to our reward.

I think I'd still rather have the Diablos Marrow...

Good question. I always find myself trying to break stuff even after the monster is dead already xp but that's just me.
