You know what I really love about this scene? How after those false grins and waves of goodbye to Spike, Rarity and Twilight waste no time making plans to follow Spike, and Rainbow agrees to it.
Not that they don't trust Spike, but they care about him enough to acknowledge Spike could get really hurt in his adventure and not return to Ponyville that they put their own safety on the line by following him into a culture that is omnivorous and would not hesitate to treat them like morsels. They know the risks of their actions, yet they don't give a damn about their own lives in the situation, and follow Spike there just to ensure his safety over theirs. Rainbow even nearly got the three killed attempting to pursue Spike when he was pulled onto a dragon raid, and the three were more than willing to fight three teenage dragons- each twice the size of an average pony-to save Spike. Sure, they ended up running away from their pursuers, but Spike appreciated it ultimately.
Anyways, it goes to show there is some realism in this quote: "Fake friends bail you out of jail and tell you what you did was wrong. Real friends sit next to you saying, 'Damn, we f**ked up... but that s**t was fun!'" And the group seemed to be really happy about their adventure in "Dragon Quest".
