Description
Well, this is the idea I mentioned earlier for the characters of 'Foster's Home for Imaginary Friends'. I thought that it would be cool if there was a version where they weren't imaginary friends, but rather spirits/kami/etc. and they lived in a haven of sorts in ancient Japan. Some of the inspiration came from 'Spirited Away', but the place would be in the "real" world, maybe like a temple or something. And sorry if my Japanese is off, I tried to use the appropriate translation for these names.Anyway, here's the rundown. Frankie ("Furansesu") is a shrine maiden, a miko, who tends to the spirits and housing, like she does in the cartoon. Madam Foster ("Reifujin Youshin") owns the property and is either the founder or part of a long-kept family tradition of housing friendly spirits. Mac ("Makoto") probably found and befriended Bloo ("Aoi"), learned of this home for spirits, and brought him there, but continues to visit daily. Bloo ("Aoi") is something of a water spirit, so his form is in a constant flux. Coco ("Taketori") here is a mix between bird and bamboo, rather than coconut tree. Eduardo ("Edowarudo") is an oni, but just like the Ed in the cartoon: a big, cowardly softy. Lastly, Wilt ("Shibomu") is something of a gangly, tall amphibious spirit (the eyes are supposed to be kind of slug-like). All of the characters would have pretty much the same personalities as they do in the cartoon. I just tweaked their character designs a bit and the settings of the story.
Well, I hope you like the concept!

No proble you deserved it. It is nice. I'm curious , what would you think will be the verison of mr. Harriman, Terrence, Duchess and Berry?(i know they aren't nice but I've some ideas about..If bloo is water spirit Berry given the color and personality could be a blood spirit..woudl explain her psychotic nature, Duchess I imagine a yurei with the body made of colourfull mirrors, a mirror version of the infamous yuki-onna, Herriman a usagi-bito, a rabbit spirit attired as japanese judge or feudal lord, instead Terrence is porbably a demon hunter in training who crave for killing some kami to make himself a name, in particual a certain prankster water spirit.)

Hey, sorry for not writing a response back sooner. I like your thoughtful suggestions, so I kept it up in my messages to remind me, but I realized it would be rude not to answer. You seem more knowledgeable about Japanese spirits than I am. Anyway, I'll try to get around to sketching those suggestions out sometime. My compliments.

I guess that would make Madam Foster Yoda, then.

It was hard to come up with something for Wilt without changing his body too much. I know he has those suction cup fingers in the show, so I ran with this amphibian concept. Coco probably had the most dramatic change-over of the imaginaries, but I'm pretty happy with the redesign, too. Eduardo was probably my favorite to redesign, even if he looks more monstrous. (I got some inspiration for his design from 's work. Check her out some time if you haven't. ) And as far as the people, they were probably the easiest to alter, especially Mac. But I do really like the idea of Frankie as a miko and the beaded necklace (if you haven't read the notes I jotted down about it, take a look) adds some individuality. Anyway, I'm glad you like it!

Heh heh-- when you said 'Fosters: Ancient Japanese Style', I was actually expecting some kind of parody of the Australian beer. Boy, this couldn't get much farther from that, huh? Great design work, and thanks for the unexpected chuckle!

Yeah, I wasn't aware that "Fosters" was also a brand name beer. My knowledge of alcohol is pretty limited. But that is a funny coincidence, though. Glad it was good for a laugh.

It's generally a boy's name, but some girls go by Makoto, too.

Dude I love it.
Mushishi is hard to explain. So I'll just say it stars a white haired Sanji with a laid back somewhat personality and it deals with spooky Japan ghost sorta not really stuff.

Well, I just...um..."acquired" it now, so I'll have to watch it some time. Probably when my buddy Rob & I do our traditional week-long marathon of animes & movies.
