Description

Feeling restless and already somewhat claustrophobic, the Stranger leaves his room and wanders the darkened streets until he finds the last bar open in this lost backwater town. Appropriate, perhaps, being a former bomb shelter. He descends a little, scans the room, hesitating, the unwelcome memory of Kasia's rules giving him pause. Because here they were... alcohol... a girl... and... yes, there was a definite scent of trouble in the close air, akin to ozone before a storm, unmistakable to the soldier he'd once been and would always be however far from the war the roads he wandered took him.

This was the time to turn back, before anything began. But perhaps it had begun; begun the moment he'd stepped down from the truck that had brought him to the edge of town. Trouble is like that. Has a way of unwinding, like a snake disturbed beyond its narrow patience, slowly, it seems, at first; and then all at once. The Stranger, having learnt long ago that walking away never stopped anything catching up with you, descends the steps to meet it.
