When he felt the blue shell coming closer and closer, Luigi knew it was all over.

As the blue shell came crashing down, he heard Mario giggling while driving past him and going back to the first position. Luigi understood now – he figured out why his brother had suddenly allowed him to take his place in the race. To think he had believed Mario was trying to make up for always being the hero, the spotlight, and not allowing Luigi to be noticed...

He was passed by some more racers before he could finally manage himself to keep on driving, but he knew it was too late: he would never be first in the race, not even second. Again, he was going to lose.

Because of Mario.

Luigi was tempted to simply get off the kart and leave. Nevertheless, in a last attempt to save some dignity, he decided to go on, even if he wasn’t going to end up in a good position. He had already been overtaken by Wario, Yoshi and Daisy, but he could still try and cross the finish line before Waluigi, Peach and Toad could make it.

So there he went.

He was lucky to get a red shell when he hit a box, so he used it against Yoshi. The finish line was still far from him, but he knew Mario would soon reach it. If only he could be in second or third place...

Peach was coming closer. Luigi kept an eye on her as he continued racing, and when he hit a box again, he felt surprised and happy at the same time.

A blue shell.

Mario would not reach the finish line soon – not if Luigi could help it.

His brother was far away from Daisy, who was second, so Luigi did not hesitate and threw the blue shell. He was so happy that he wasn’t even bothered about Peach overtaking him. It was enough to know Mario was going to have some trouble keeping first place.

Luigi drove happily while hearing the sound of the collision, and gave Peach a hideous stare as he drove past her. Wario was not too far away, but Luigi didn’t think he could overtake him before the race was over. He did not care – Daisy was going to be the victor, for she was about to enter the finish line. Wario soon reached Mario, who was still trying to go back to the race after the blow, and they got into a kart fight for the second position.

In the meanwhile, Daisy finally became the winner.

Luigi was able to keep his fourth position and entered the finish line whistling, happier than he had expected to be.

There was a tie between Mario and Wario, for they had crossed the finish line almost at the same time, so they both won silver. In the podium, standing in the higher position, Daisy raised her golden cup and waved at Luigi, who looked at her with pride. He couldn’t help but look at Mario too, and he was satisfied to see his older brother was not happy at all with his position. Now you know what it is to be second, he thought to himself.

After the celebration was over, Luigi bade Daisy farewell, for she was going back to her neighbor kingdom, Sarasaland, and then he walked back home alone. He marched calmly, enjoying the view of the Mushroom Kingdom at night and thinking of his journal – he couldn’t wait to write about what he had been through that day! It was going to be funny and outrageous at the same time, but at least, he had taken revenge on Mario. After all those years. It was only a game, yes, but it had made a difference for him.

Soon he finally got home and prepared to go to bed. Once he was wearing his green-stripped pajamas, he had dinner alone, made himself some hot chocolate for dessert, went down the basement and started writing.

Luigi was so focused on his journal, he didn’t even notice Mario getting home. He only did so when he heard the basement’s door slowly opening.

“Luigi? Are you there?”

Luigi sighed before answering “Yes.” He closed his journal and stood up.

“It was you, right?” Mario accused, coming down the stairs. “You sent me that blue shell, didn’t you?”

At first, Luigi was surprised – he had been writing for so long, he had almost forgotten about rage. But seeing Mario mad made him angry too.

“Yes, I did,” he answered, crossing his arms. “Do you have any problem with that?”

“Problem?” Mario repeated, his eyes wide open. “Problem!? What do you think? I was second instead of first! I should have been the winner!”

“What upsets you more, Mario?” Luigi asked calmly. “The fact that you were defeated or the fact that you are, for once, second?”

Luigi couldn’t tell which was redder: Mario’s face or his hat.

“You stupid dummy,” Mario began, furious. “How dare you—“

But his words were interrupted by a sound they both knew very well, unfortunately.
