What's so bad about using references? I use them all the time, and it is a good thing. Over time your memory will get better and you will get used to drawing them that you won't even need a reference. You're only 14 or 13, how do you expect yourself to memorize how everything looks like if you have not lived in this world long enough to do that?
I had this talk with my mom today so yeah, I came to my senses (I was complaining about the same thing that you were complaining about).

Its a long story. Basiclly, I barely made it into kindergarten at 4 because I just moved to kentucky in like they have this stupid age requirement and I barely made it into kindergarten. Later in 3rd grade, my mom held me back cause she thought I was to young to move on.
