Just as a heads up- this is severely outdated and I could have definitely done it so much better!
Alright so someone requested that I explain how I make such "good" next gen characters. So let's go!
Oh, and I chose Flashlight because the example on the right is how most "children" end up looking.

I'll probably keep updating this over time, but right now, this is all I could think of. Additionally, I'd like to say, take some of it with a grain of salt- it is old, but I'd like to hope that I'm helping someone with their own designs!

Edit: I get that the one on the left doesn't look exactly like you'd imagine- and that's my fault. Every point I made still stands, but the design choice I made clearly wasn't fitting. Colours were still blended, and a more unique approach was taken- that is all!

- Most people don't realise this, but genetics can be passed down from ancestors. You don't need to give a Flashlight child the EXACT same colours as the parents, be creative! Mix the orange and purple, heck, even blend some of Night Light's colours or Twilight Velvet's.. Make it different, stand out!
- The colours actually work together unlike the purple and orange. They're subtle and work together- and ultimately don't make your eyes bleed.
- The left one isn't the "pinkie little perfect princess", she has scars and bandages to show that she isn't afraid to fight for whatever she believes in. While, as mentioned by someone in the comments, it might be nice to have a perfect princess-type, don't forget to balance them with flaws- whether it's personality-wise or their appearance!
- There are various types of jewellery, not just crowns and tiaras. Earrings and necklaces can be subtle ways to show that a pony is royalty or has ties to the princesses. You don't need a recoloured crown to show somepony's status. Other accessories or outfits can also be encouraged, depending on their status and heritage!

- Yes, the hair on the one on the right is OK, but it is so OVERDONE. Don't be afraid to give fanfoals their own style and don't just make a recoloured Twilight or Flash.
- The random splotches of colour... Neither parent has markings, why do people colour the hooves a completely different colour? Or give them random pattens on their flank?? It makes no sense, the pony should just be one colour, not two, three or four- of course, depending on who their parents are. In Pipsqueak of Luna's case, this point may be ignored.
- Dear lord, the wings really annoy me. The whole wing is not meant to be another colour, only the tips. It just looks strange, don't you think? The one on the left is the perfect example of this. Gradients are also valid, such as in Princess Cadence's case in the show.
- No colour mixing was involved with the purple one, it just looks like a Twilight with longer, dip-dyed mane and random paint splatters.
