The best pieces are never planned, I wasn't even thinking of a hippocampus when I began, but I think it turned out rather well.
I used the colouring of a whale shark for the pattern on his body, an incredibly endangered species of shark that sifts through the ocean waters for krill, like a whale.
There isn't an aggressive bone its body, fitting for a sea horse.

This one had been caught by a fishing vessel and weren't the men on that boat delighted when they saw him! They hauled him aboard and roped him and left him to dry out at the bow of the boat.
But one man was so captured by his beauty and so moved by his frightened cries he cut the ropes binding the creature and let it slip free.
Into the water he plunged, the ropes sliding out from under his smooth belly. The water was cool and wonderful on his skin. The sea horse was free.
The other fishermen were furious with their friend but what could they do?
He watched as the others turned away, watched the waves and wished the sea horse luck. And the sea horse looked back, just once before plunging onward into the ocean depths. He would not forget that man's kindness, because magic creatures don't ever forget. He will remember and at a time when the man is most in need of a favour, he will return.
