Hi all, not only is this my first deviation; this is actually my first foray into digital illustration. The piece came about just through an interest in mythological / occult imagery and while this image is laden with cliches it was a simple enough concept to experiment various techniques with.Any advise / critisism / questions would be awesome!

This reminds me of that... Um... Tales of Myth or something... I can't remember what the book was called. Maybe it was just "Myth". Awesome job! I really like it!

this is an amazing piece of art for a first attempt at digital, it's no wonder you got a DD for it (and the attention you get is quite mad, isn't it?). As for criticism, there isn't much, as the image works as a whole, but odd bits would help it work much better. Someone's already mentioned the light source, but it wold have been nice to have seen stronger light and shadows on his face and nearer the light, and shadows cast by the body parts, like his head and arm across his body. The only other thing is the spottiness on his chest.. everywhere else it works really well, but i think there it interferes with the form of the pectoral muscles. And his tail looks like its joined to the side of his backside, rather than the back.
Buuut, having said all that, it's not all that important, maybe something you could bear in mind for the future, but as a whole picture, this works really well. And sometimes cliches are good... especially when it comes to demons and the like! Great piece!

nice...when you say digital art though...do you mean art with added digital stuff or 3d ar?...if you are interested in 3d art, i have a friend who does wonders with it...

Im a fan of all kinds of Art / Digital art in this genre, I used PsCS for this one; from a basic sketch upwards - but I'd like eventually to learn some 3D and integrate some photoshoppery to make a finished rendering, but one thing at a time right? I wanna practice my 2D skills for a while first.

I might fix this at a later date, but this is a learning piece so I don't wanna get too bogged down on one thing, I wanna work on some new stuff and put into practice some of the advice i've been recieving.
And you're right tho, I need to pay more attention to my light sources...

All I have for you is praise. I really like the colour scheme. Cliche might be the word for it but there's nothing like a tried and tested method that looks great. Good job! I look forward to seeing some more of your work.

This is amazing! I really love this one, especially the dynamics of the creature.
There is something I couldn't figure out why...
the magic ring on the floor... the left side got "extensions"... how come the right side has none? It feels kind of unbalanced.
The shading on the creature needs more attention, since there are two light sources, the ring and the globe.
But, I still love this one. CRAZY GOOD for first attempt.

This is wonderfully done! You're sure this is your first time? You're a natural and going to be one of the best, that's for sure. You quite easily gave this a spooky feeling by adding the foggyness and making the background so dark and shadey. This actually reminds me of how I pictured the summoning of a demon from the books The Amulet of Samarkand and The Golemn's Eye, and from the looks of it, this would be quite the demon to summon.
And i must agree with Starlit, the claws and tail are awsome.

Though I usually shy away from pictures that ahve pentagrams in them, I have to say this one is indeed eye catching. Almost impossible to not fav this one due to the detail that is shown. The Colors blend well emphasizing this picture, it creates not only a very visual back drop, but it also compels you to still see the menace that is effectively conveyed. Great Job.

The only critical comment I would make is that the perspective on his body seems a bit off; the pillars in the BG give me the sense of looking up at him, so i think I'm seeing a bit too much of the top of his thigh and his left shoulder/arm should be tilted higher. I don't really think it detracts from the power of your piece though... and I'm sorry if someone already mentioned this, I didn't read through all the comments you've received

Fanx man, not sure if someone has mentioned this yet but I think you're right about the perspective on the thigh.
The spotty texture on the skin was pretty easy to do, just grab a nice spotty brush, paint it on (in a new layer over your creature), change the blending mode from normal to overlay or multiply (whatever works best) and lower the opacity slightly.

Very cool! I'm glad to see that the pentacle is upside-down when facing him, so you should be in the clear for overzealous Wiccans. It's a very nice picture, especially seeing as it's your first digital picture. I wish I had such patience, but I do not (at least not for the computer, anyway
